About this passage

Psalm 100 is a short psalm of five verses, headed in Hebrew as a psalm for giving thanks. It calls all the earth to make a joyful noise, serve the LORD with gladness and enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.

Its reasons for praise are simple: the LORD is God, he made us and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture, and his love endures forever. It echoes the shepherd imagery of Psalm 23 in a communal voice.

The psalm is a staple of Jewish and Christian worship, often used as a call to worship. A metrical version, set to a tune called Old Hundredth, became one of the most familiar hymns in English-speaking churches. Scholars generally read it as a hymn for temple processions, though the author is unnamed.

  • Thanksgiving
  • Praise and worship
