Frequently asked questions
- Do spaces count as characters?
- Yes, on almost every platform. That's why both counts are shown: with spaces for posts, bios and forms, and without spaces for the few places that ignore them.
- How many characters can an X (Twitter) post have?
- 280 on a standard account. Emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as two, and every link counts as 23 however long it is. The counter applies the same rules.
- How many characters fit in a text message?
- 160 if you stick to plain letters, numbers and common punctuation. One emoji or special character drops the limit to 70. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 (or 67) characters each, and the counter shows how many parts you'll send.
- How long should a meta description be?
- About 150 to 160 characters. Search results cut longer descriptions short, so the counter warns you at 155.
- Is an emoji one character?
- Here, yes: anything you see as one symbol counts as one, including emoji with skin tones and accented letters. Some platforms count emoji as two.
- Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
- No. Counting happens on your device and your text never leaves it.
