As per the GATE 2027 photograph and signature guidelines from IIT Madras, the organising institute, the photo must be a colour JPEG between 200 × 260 and 530 × 690 pixels, 5-600 KB, with a width-to-height ratio of 0.66-0.89 and a white background. The signature must be a JPEG between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 pixels, 3-300 KB. GATE checks pixels and shape more than file size, so the free image resizer and free image compressor are the tools to use.
GATE's organising IIT changes every year and so can the rules. The figures here are from the GOAPS photograph and signature page on the GATE 2027 website; check that page, and the information brochure, before uploading.
GATE 2027 photo and signature rules
| Photo | Signature | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | JPEG/JPG | JPEG/JPG |
| Minimum pixels | 200 × 260 | 250 × 80 |
| Maximum pixels | 530 × 690 | 580 × 180 |
| File size | 5-600 KB | 3-300 KB |
| Shape | Aspect ratio (width ÷ height) 0.66 to 0.89 | Height : width between 1 : 2.75 and 1 : 3.75 |
| Framing | Face covers 60-70% of the image | Signature covers 70-80% of the image |
| Other | Colour, passport size (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm), white background, front view | Black or dark blue ink only |
Notice how generous the file sizes are compared with bank or SSC forms. The hard limits are the pixel box and the shape. A photo straight from a phone (around 3000 × 4000 px) is far too large in pixels even though the 600 KB limit sounds roomy.
Why the shape matters
GATE's ratio rule rejects photos that are too square or too tall. A passport shape of 3.5 × 4.5 works out to 0.78, right in the middle of the allowed 0.66-0.89. So the simplest plan is: crop to passport shape, then resize to a width inside the pixel box.
Good targets that satisfy every rule:
- Photo: 420 × 540 px (ratio 0.78). Or the minimum-safe 280 × 360 px.
- Signature: 450 × 140 px (height : width of 1 : 3.2). Or 300 × 95 px.
Photo, step by step
- Take the photo against a plain white wall, facing the camera directly, in even light. No cap, sunglasses or coloured glasses. If your regular glasses reflect light, take them off, as the guidelines say.
- Crop to passport shape. Open the free image cropper, choose Passport 35×45 mm, and size the box so your face takes up roughly two-thirds of it, the 60-70% GATE asks for. That's less tight than some exams; leave a little space for shoulders and above the hair. Choose JPG under Save as and click Crop image. The cropper doesn't accept iPhone HEIC files, so use a JPG copy of the photo.
- Resize into the pixel box. In the free image resizer, choose Pixels, keep Lock proportions ticked, and type 420 as the width. The height fills in as 540. Click Resize image and check the dimensions shown next to the download button.
- Check the size. The resizer saves JPG at high quality, so a 420 × 540 photo usually lands well inside 5-600 KB. If you want it smaller anyway, run it through the free image compressor at 80%.
If the resizer shows 420 × 539 because your crop was a pixel off, that's fine: the ratio is still about 0.78 and inside every limit.

Signature, step by step
The signature has a stricter shape: it must be between 2.75 and 3.75 times as wide as it is tall, and the ink should fill 70-80% of the image. A tight crop around a typical signature is usually close to that, but not always.
- Sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white paper. Your full signature, not initials, and not in all capitals.
- Photograph it flat, in daylight, with no shadow and no lines from ruled paper.
- Crop to the ratio. In the free image cropper, choose Free, then type a width and height under the picture in the ratio you want, for example Width 2400 and Height 750 (1 : 3.2). These boxes count pixels of your original photo, so on a phone photo use a big box in this shape; the resize step sets the final size. Drag the box so the signature fills most of it with a small margin. Save as JPG and click Crop image.
- Resize. In the resizer, with Lock proportions on, type 450 as the width; the height comes out at about 140. Click Resize image.
If your signature is unusually tall (a big loop) and won't fill 70-80% of a 1 : 3.2 box, try 1 : 2.8, such as 840 × 300 in the cropper, then 420 × 150 in the resizer. Both are inside the allowed range.
What GATE rejects
From the GATE 2027 guidelines, photos are rejected for things like a non-white background or other people and objects in it, a cap or sunglasses, a shadow or cloth over the face, blur, or a mask. Signatures are rejected if they're digital, in a colour other than black or blue, in all capitals, initials only, on a dark background, too small, or with other writing around them. The guidelines also warn that the application fee is not refunded if the application is rejected for non-compliant images.
Quick checks before you upload
- Photo between 200 × 260 and 530 × 690 px, shape about 0.78.
- Signature between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 px, roughly three times as wide as tall.
- Both are JPG, with file sizes inside the ranges.
- Face covers about two-thirds of the photo; signature fills most of its image.
For the general method across exams, see reducing photo size for exam forms. If your other forms ask for sizes in KB rather than pixels, image KB vs pixels explains how the two relate.
The quick way
Crop to passport shape, resize to 420 px wide, and give it a final check in the free image compressor. All three tools are free, need no account, and keep your photo on your own device.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the GATE 2027 photo size in pixels?
- As per the GATE 2027 guidelines from IIT Madras, between 200 × 260 and 530 × 690 pixels, with a width-to-height ratio of 0.66-0.89. 420 × 540 is a safe choice.
- What is the GATE signature size?
- Between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 pixels, 3-300 KB, JPEG, with a height-to-width ratio between 1 : 2.75 and 1 : 3.75.
- Why was my GATE photo rejected even though it was under 600 KB?
- The pixel size or shape was probably outside the limits, or the face covered too much or too little of the frame. Check the dimensions and the 0.66-0.89 ratio.
- Can I wear glasses in the GATE photo?
- Normal spectacles are allowed if there's no glare. Sunglasses and coloured glasses are not.
- Do GATE's rules change every year?
- They can, because a different IIT organises GATE each year. Check the photograph and signature page on the current GATE website.
