How to Make a Logo Background Transparent (PNG)
Turn a logo stuck on a white box into a transparent PNG for your website, slides and merch. Start from SVG if you have it; otherwise cut out the background.

To make a logo background transparent, start from the best file you have. If there's an SVG version, convert it with the free SVG to PNG converter, which keeps the background transparent by default. If you only have a JPG or PNG with a white box behind the logo, run it through the Background Remover to get a transparent PNG at the same size. It's free for images up to 2 megapixels, which covers most logo files.
A logo on a white rectangle looks fine on a white page and terrible everywhere else: on a coloured website header, a dark slide, a T-shirt mock-up or a photo. A transparent background lets the logo sit directly on whatever is behind it.
First, check what files you already have
Ask your designer, or look through old emails and the folder from when the logo was made. In order of preference:
| You have | Do this | Result |
|---|---|---|
| SVG, AI, EPS or PDF from the designer | Convert the SVG to PNG at the size you need | Perfectly sharp, transparent |
| PNG that already has transparency | Nothing; check it on a dark background | Ready to use |
| PNG or JPG with a white or coloured box | Remove the background | Transparent PNG |
| A photo or screenshot of the logo | Remove the background, then check closely | Usable for web, rarely good enough for print |
An SVG is a drawing, not a picture, so the free SVG to PNG converter can redraw it at any width up to 8,000 pixels with sharp edges and a transparent background. That beats any cut-out. Our guide to converting SVG to PNG explains the settings.

Make the logo background transparent from a JPG or PNG
- Open the Background Remover.
- Choose your logo file: JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 30 MB.
- Wait while it cuts out the logo. It usually takes about a minute.
- Download the transparent PNG. It comes back at the same pixel size as your original.
Free size limit
Images up to 2 megapixels are free, with no daily limit; Pro handles bigger ones. Most logo files are far smaller than that: a 1200 × 600 logo is 0.72 megapixels. If yours is bigger, shrink it first with the free image resizer; 1,600 × 1,200 is just under the limit.
Your image is uploaded for processing, deleted as soon as it's done, and the PNG is available to download for 1 hour.
Check the result on a dark background
A cut-out can look perfect on the white download preview and show problems on a dark page. Drop the PNG onto a dark slide or a black document and zoom in:
- Inside letters. Look at the enclosed gaps in letters like O, A, B, e and R, and any gaps inside a symbol. They should be transparent too, not small white islands.
- Thin details. Fine lines, small taglines and tiny trademark symbols are the hardest parts to keep. Check they're all there.
- Edges. The tool keeps edges soft, which helps logos blend onto any colour. A faint light halo can appear if the original JPG had blurry edges.
- White parts of the logo. A white element (white text on a blue badge, for example) should stay, because it's inside the logo. A white element that touches the white background directly is harder to separate, so check it carefully.
The remover is built for a clear main subject: people, products, objects. Simple, bold logos usually cut out well. Logos made of thin outlines or scattered small pieces are harder; for those, asking the designer for the original file is often quicker.
Using your transparent logo
On a website
Upload the PNG directly, or make it lighter first. The free image compressor can save it as WebP, which keeps transparency and is usually much smaller than PNG. Don't save it as JPG: JPG has no transparency, and the empty areas turn white again. Our JPG vs PNG guide explains why.
As a favicon
Feed the transparent PNG into the free favicon generator. Square images of at least 512 × 512 pixels work best, and simple, bold shapes stay readable at 16 pixels. If your logo is a wide wordmark, crop out just the symbol or first letter with the free image cropper first. See how to make a favicon.
In slides and documents
PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and Word all keep PNG transparency, so the logo sits straight on your slide colour.
On merch
Printers want large, sharp files. Tell them what you have: if it's the cut-out from a small JPG, it may be fine for a small chest logo but not for a full-back print. For large prints, the original vector file from your designer is what printers really want. For an enlarged version of a small logo, the Image Upscaler can make it four times wider and taller (free for images up to 2 megapixels), though its result is a JPG with a white background, so remove the background again after upscaling.
Remove your logo background
Have an SVG? Use the free SVG to PNG converter. Only have a JPG or PNG on a white box? Open the Background Remover, drop in your logo and download a transparent PNG. Logo files under 2 megapixels are free.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I make a logo background transparent for free?
- If you have the SVG, convert it with the free SVG to PNG converter; the background stays transparent. For a JPG or PNG, the Background Remover is free for images up to 2 megapixels.
- Why does my logo have a white box on my website?
- The file is a JPG, or a PNG saved without transparency. Remove the background and save as PNG or WebP, never JPG.
- Why are the insides of my letters still white?
- Some enclosed areas, like the middle of an O, can be missed. Check the result on a dark background; if they're still filled, ask your designer for the original file or try a sharper, larger copy.
- Can I convert the transparent logo to JPG?
- You can, but JPG has no transparency, so the background becomes white again. Use PNG or WebP to keep it transparent.
- Is a transparent PNG good enough for printing?
- For small prints, often yes, if it's large and sharp. For large merch or signage, ask for the original vector file (SVG, AI, EPS or PDF).
