How to Remove Blank Pages from a PDF Free (Duplex Scans)
Delete the blank back sides a double-sided scan leaves in a PDF. Spot the pattern, type the page numbers once and remove them all, free and without uploading.

To remove blank pages from a PDF, note their page numbers, open the free PDF page remover, type them all in one go (like 2, 4, 6, 8) and click Delete pages. When a double-sided scan has left a blank back after every page, the blanks are usually every even page, so you can type the list in seconds. It's free, nothing is uploaded, and the pages you keep are copied unchanged.
Blank pages sneak in when you scan a stack on a duplex (double-sided) scanner or copier, which scans both sides of every sheet whether or not the back has anything on it. A 20-sheet stack where only a few sheets are printed on both sides comes back as a 40-page PDF that's half blank. Blank pages also turn up in PDFs exported from Word (a stray page break at the end) and in merged bundles.
Step 1: Find the blank pages fast
Open the PDF in any viewer that shows page thumbnails: a browser's built-in PDF viewer, Preview on a Mac (View, Thumbnails), or Adobe Reader's page panel. Thumbnails let you see 10-20 pages at a glance, and blank ones jump out as white rectangles.
Then look for the pattern:
| What you scanned | Where the blanks usually are |
|---|---|
| Single-sided pages on a duplex scanner | Every even page: 2, 4, 6 … |
| Mostly single-sided, a few printed on both sides | Even pages, except the backs that have content |
| Booklet or form with a blank last side | The last page, or the last page of each section |
| Word export with a trailing page break | The final page only |
| Merged bundle | The last page of some of the merged files |
Don't assume. A back side that looks blank in a thumbnail may hold a faint stamp, a signature, a page number or "This page is intentionally left blank", which some forms need to keep. Zoom in on anything you're unsure about.
Step 2: Write the list once
Write down the page numbers as you scroll. The page remover accepts:
- single pages separated by commas:
2, 4, 6 - ranges with a dash:
30-34(for a run of blank pages) - a mix:
2, 4, 6, 10-12, 40
For a stack scanned single-sided on a duplex scanner, the list is just the even numbers. For a 40-page scan that's 20 numbers:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40
Type it in a notes app first if it's long, then paste it in. Use the page numbers your viewer shows in its page counter, not numbers printed on the pages themselves, which often differ.
Step 3: Delete them all in one go
- Open the free PDF page remover.
- Click Choose a PDF or drop the file. It shows the file name, page count and size.
- In Pages to delete, type or paste your list.
- Click Delete pages.
- Click Download PDF. The new file is named after the original with
-editedadded, and your original file is left untouched.
If you type a page number higher than the page count, the tool tells you which entry is out of range, so a typo can't silently remove the wrong page. It also won't let you delete every page.
Step 4: Check the result
Open the new PDF and scroll through:
- The page count should be the original minus the pages you removed: 40 minus 20 is 20.
- Spot-check the pages either side of each gap, especially any sheet printed on both sides.
- If you removed one too many, nothing is lost: go back to the original and try again with a corrected list.
When it's quicker to keep pages than to delete them
If most of the document is blank and only a few pages matter, type the pages you want instead. In the free PDF splitter, choose One PDF with these pages and type, for example, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. You get a new PDF with just those pages, in that order. This is handy when a long duplex scan has content on only a handful of pages.
Our general guide to deleting pages from a PDF covers removing pages with content, and extracting pages covers the keep-these-pages approach in more depth.
Does removing blank pages make the file smaller?
Yes. A blank scanned page isn't truly empty: it's a picture of white paper, with its texture, shadows and slight tint, so it can take about as much space as a page of text in the same scan.
The page remover builds a new file from the pages you keep, so the blanks' data goes with them and the PDF shrinks by roughly their share. If it's still too big for an upload, see compressing a PDF to 1 MB.
Next time: avoid the blanks when scanning
- Choose single-sided (simplex) in the scanner or copier settings when your pages are printed on one side.
- Many scanner apps have a "skip blank pages" option; it works well on clean white paper but can drop pages with very faint content, so check the count.
- Scan double-sided sheets and single-sided sheets as separate batches, then join them with the free PDF merger.
Our scanned PDF fixes checklist covers the other common scanning problems: sideways pages, wrong order and huge files.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I remove all blank pages from a scanned PDF at once?
- Note the blank page numbers (often every even page in a duplex scan), type them all into the free PDF page remover, like 2, 4, 6, 8, and click Delete pages.
- Can the tool find blank pages automatically?
- No. You type the page numbers yourself, which avoids deleting pages with faint stamps or signatures. A thumbnail view makes the blanks easy to spot.
- Why does my scanner add blank pages?
- It's set to double-sided (duplex) scanning, so it saves the back of every sheet, even when it's empty. Choose single-sided for one-sided pages.
- Will removing pages change the rest of the PDF?
- No. The remaining pages are copied exactly as they were, and your original file stays unchanged.
- Is my PDF uploaded?
- No. Pages are removed on your device and the file never leaves it.
