URL Encode and Decode Online (Percent-Encoding)

Encode text for a URL or decode %20-style percent-encoding back to readable text, as you type. Paste a full link to see its query parameters listed and decoded. Nothing leaves your device.

Direction
Encode

Encodes every character that has a special meaning in a URL, including / ? & = and #. Use it for a single query value or path segment.

Encoding happens on your device. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere.

How to use the URL Encode / Decode

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. When encoding, choose whether it's a single value or a whole URL.
  3. Paste your text. Copy the result, or press Swap to reverse it.

Frequently asked questions

What is URL encoding?
Web addresses can only contain certain characters. URL encoding (also called percent-encoding) writes everything else as % followed by two hex digits, so a space becomes %20 and é becomes %C3%A9.
Should I encode a value or a whole URL?
Encode a value when you're putting text into one part of a link, such as a search term after ?q=. That also encodes / ? & and =. Encode a whole URL to fix spaces and accents in a link while keeping its structure.
Why is a space sometimes + instead of %20?
Web forms send spaces as +. Both mean a space in query strings; turn on the + option to match the style you need.
Why does decoding fail?
A % must be followed by two hex digits, and the codes must form valid UTF-8 text. The error message points to the first part that doesn't.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Encoding and decoding happen on your device.
