Frequently asked questions
- What is Base64?
- A way to write any data, including images and files, using only 64 safe characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, + and /). It's used in email attachments, data URLs, JSON and web tokens.
- Why does my decoded text look garbled?
- The Base64 probably holds a file, such as an image or PDF, rather than text. Use "Save as file" to get the original file back.
- What is URL-safe Base64?
- A variant that uses - and _ instead of + and /, and usually drops the = padding, so the result can sit in a web address. This tool decodes both kinds automatically.
- Is Base64 encryption?
- No. Anyone can decode Base64, so never use it to hide passwords or private data.
- Is my data uploaded?
- No. Encoding and decoding happen on your device, so it's safe for private data.
