Frequently asked questions
- What is a UUID?
- A universally unique identifier: a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, like 3f2b8c1e-9d4a-4b7e-8c2f-1a6d5e9b0c47. It's also called a GUID.
- Should I use version 4 or version 7?
- Version 4 is fully random and the most widely supported. Version 7 starts with the current time, so new IDs sort in the order they were made, which keeps database indexes fast.
- Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
- In practice, no. A version 4 UUID has 122 random bits; you would need to make billions every second for many years before a repeat became likely.
- Is a GUID the same as a UUID?
- Yes. GUID is the name used in Microsoft tools. Turn on uppercase and braces for the {XXXXXXXX-...} style some of them expect.
- Are the UUIDs stored or sent anywhere?
- No. They're generated on your device and never leave it.
