Hash Generator: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 Checksums
Get the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hash of any text as you type, or the checksum of a file, and compare it with the one a download page lists. Your text and files never leave your device.
Hashes are worked out on your device. Your text and files are never uploaded.
How to use the Hash Generator
- Choose Text or File.
- Type your text, or pick the file you downloaded.
- Copy the hash you need, or paste the expected checksum to see if it matches.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I check that a download isn't corrupted?
- Switch to File, pick the downloaded file and paste the checksum shown on the download page. If it matches, the file is exactly what the publisher released.
- Which hash should I use?
- SHA-256 is the usual choice today. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for spotting accidental damage but are no longer safe against deliberate tampering.
- Can a hash be reversed to get the text back?
- No. A hash is a one-way fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, but you can't work backwards from it.
- Should I hash passwords with this?
- Not for storing them in an app. Password storage needs a slow, salted method made for passwords, not a plain hash.
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. Hashes are worked out on your device, so even large or private files stay with you.
