Emotion Match: A Free Listening Game About Tone of Voice

Free, no sign-up, works in your browser. Emotion Match is a listening game. You hear a short, plain line, such as "The meeting is on Thursday at three o'clock," said calmly, joyfully, angrily, sadly, with surprise, in fear, sarcastically or tenderly, and you pick the way it was said. Try a new Daily 8 every day, or practise two ways of saying things that can sound close.

How to play Emotion Match

  1. Press Play and turn your sound on. Emotion Match is made for listening, and headphones help.
  2. Choose Daily 8 for a new set of eight lines, or Practice and pick two ways of saying things to tell apart.
  3. Press Listen, then choose how the line was said from three or four choices. The words are the same every time, so only the voice can tell you.
  4. After each answer the words are written out. Hear the line said the way you chose beside the way it was recorded, then go on to the next round.
  5. At the end see your score, keep your streak going by finishing a Daily 8 each day, and practise the pairs you mixed up.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need sound to play?

Yes. Emotion Match is a listening game, so each round plays a short spoken line and you answer by what you hear. If you cannot listen right now, the menu has "How each one sounds", which describes in words how each way of saying a line is recorded here. It does not replace the game.

What are the eight ways of saying a line?

Calm, joyful, angry, sad, surprised, afraid, sarcastic and tender. Each line is recorded in all eight, with the same voice and the same words, so the only thing that changes is how it is said.

What is Daily 8?

A set of eight rounds that is the same for everyone on a given UTC day. You get each of the eight ways of saying a line once, and four choices each time. Finish one each day to keep your streak.

What is Practice?

Eight rounds on one pair of ways of saying things that can sound close, such as calm and tender, or joyful and surprised. Each round has three choices: the two in the pair and one other.

Can I see the words while I listen?

Yes. They are hidden until you answer by default, and the menu has a switch to show them while you listen. The words never say how the line was meant, so it does not give the answer away.

What do I see after I answer?

The line written out, whether you were right, and a button to hear it said the way you chose beside the way it was recorded, so you can hear what changed while the words stayed the same.

What language are the lines in?

English. The game's menus and buttons are in your language, but the eight spoken lines are in English.

Is this a test?

No. It is a game about listening, for fun and practice. It does not measure or diagnose anything about you.

Does it listen to me or send anything anywhere?

No. It never uses your microphone. The recordings were made ahead of time and are part of the game, so they play on your device. Your answers are saved on your device, and to your account if you sign in so your streak follows you.

Can I play offline?

Yes, once you install it. The recordings are part of the installed game, so you can play with no connection.

Can I install it on my iPhone or Android phone?

Yes, from your browser and free. On iPhone, open Emotion Match in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome and tap Install. You do not need an app store.

Is Emotion Match free?

Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
