- Playing along with friends

- Training your ears

How Guess the Sound compares
| Option | How it compares |
|---|---|
| Daily music clip quizzes | Those play short clips of songs and ask you to name them. Guess the Sound has no music: it is everyday sounds like animals, kitchens, weather and machines, all made for the game. |
| Sound quiz books and videos | A quiz you read or watch is the same every time. This one is a new set of five every day, with a streak and a score to share. |
How to play Guess the Sound
- Press Play, then Start. The game opens over the whole window (and full screen, if the box is ticked). Turn your volume up first: it is a game you play by ear.
- Press Listen to hear the first sound. The four answers open once you have heard it.
- Choose what you think made the sound. You can press Replay up to three times first, but a right answer on the first listen scores a bonus point.
- Go through all five sounds. A right answer scores 1 point and 1 more if you needed only one listen, so a day is out of 10.
- See your score as five coloured squares and share it. A new set of five opens every day at 00:00 UTC.
Frequently asked questions
What is a day's puzzle?
Five sounds, picked from a bank of 90 by the UTC date, so everyone gets the same five on the same day. Each sound has four answers, and the wrong ones are always other sounds of the same kind, such as other animals or other kitchen sounds. No sound comes back within 18 days.
Can I replay a sound?
Yes, up to three times for each sound. Answering on the first listen scores one more point than answering after a replay. After you answer, you can hear the sound again as often as you like.
Does it work without sound?
No. It is made for listening: every question is a sound and the answers are words, so there is nothing to go on without hearing it. If the game's sound is off or turned down to zero, the game says so, and the Listen button waits until you turn it on. It can't be played by someone who can't hear, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
Are the sounds real recordings?
No. They are original sounds made for this game with AI, one for each answer, and checked by a person. None is a clip from a film, a song or anyone's recording.
How does the streak work?
Each day you finish adds one. Miss a whole day and it starts again from one. Your streak, your best score and the days you have played are saved on this device, and in your account if you are signed in, so they follow you to your other devices.
Does it need an internet connection?
Only to load it. The sounds are part of the game, so nothing is fetched from anywhere else while you play. Installed from guess-the-sound.everyapp.one it works offline, and your results sync the next time you are online and signed in.
Is Guess the Sound free?
Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
