Destiny, Expression and Soul Urge Numbers Explained
How to work out your destiny (expression), soul urge and personality numbers from your name with the Pythagorean letter table, with a worked example.
Updated · 5 min read
In numerology, your birth date gives your life path number and your name gives you three more: the destiny number (also called the expression number), the soul urge number (or heart's desire) and the personality number. All three turn letters into digits and add them up. It is simple arithmetic, and you can do it with a pencil in five minutes, or type your name into the name number calculator.
A note on what this is. Numerology is a belief system, not science. The numbers don't measure anything about a person, and no research supports them. They are a way people have long enjoyed thinking about themselves, and the sums themselves are fun to do. Treat the meanings as prompts for reflection.
The Pythagorean letter table
The most widely used system today is the Pythagorean one. It assigns the letters of the alphabet to the numbers 1 to 9 in order, then starts again at 1:
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |
Another system, Chaldean numerology, uses a different table with no 9 and a different set of rules. The name number calculator supports both; this guide sticks to the Pythagorean one because it is the most common in modern books and websites.
The three numbers
Destiny (expression) number. Add every letter of your full name as written at birth. It is said to show your talents and what you are here to do.
Soul urge (heart's desire) number. Add only the vowels: A, E, I, O, U. It is said to show your inner motivations, what you want deep down.
Personality number. Add only the consonants. It is said to describe the face you show to the world.
Notice that the soul urge and personality numbers always add up to the destiny number, which is a handy way to check your arithmetic.
One quirk: Y is the awkward letter. Most Pythagorean writers count Y as a consonant, and some count it as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound (as in "Lynn" or "Tyler"). Pick one rule and stick with it, and know that a site may differ from you.
Reducing to a single digit
After adding, reduce the total by adding its digits until you reach a number from 1 to 9. A total of 30 becomes 3 + 0 = 3. Most systems stop at the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 instead of reducing them. (For more on master numbers, see our guide to life path number meanings.)
Worked example: Maya Lin
Write out each letter's value using the table above.
- M = 4, A = 1, Y = 7, A = 1 → Maya adds to 13
- L = 3, I = 9, N = 5 → Lin adds to 17
Destiny number: 13 + 17 = 30, and 3 + 0 = 3.
Soul urge number (vowels only): the vowels are A, A in Maya (1 + 1 = 2) and I in Lin (9). 2 + 9 = 11. That is a master number, so it stays 11 (and reduces to 2).
Personality number (consonants only, with Y as a consonant): M, Y in Maya (4 + 7 = 11), then L and N in Lin (3 + 5 = 8). 11 + 8 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
Check: 11 + 19 = 30, the same as the destiny total.
What the numbers are traditionally said to mean
The same one-to-nine meanings are used for all name numbers; what changes is which part of you the number describes.
| Number | Keywords |
|---|---|
| 1 | Independent, original, a leader |
| 2 | Cooperative, sensitive, diplomatic |
| 3 | Expressive, creative, sociable |
| 4 | Practical, disciplined, dependable |
| 5 | Adventurous, adaptable, curious |
| 6 | Caring, responsible, family-minded |
| 7 | Analytical, reflective, private |
| 8 | Ambitious, organised, goal-driven |
| 9 | Compassionate, idealistic, generous |
| 11 | Intuitive, inspiring (master number) |
| 22 | Builder of big plans (master number) |
| 33 | Teacher and healer (master number) |
So a soul urge of 11 would be read as someone whose deeper motivations are intuitive and inspirational, while a destiny of 3 says their talents lean toward creative expression. Real people have many more sides than a table of nine keywords. If a reading feels flat or wrong, that tells you something about you too.
Which name should you use?
This is where authors disagree, which is why two sites can give different answers.
- The full birth name is the standard Pythagorean choice: every given name and surname as on your birth certificate. Most modern books use it.
- The name you use every day is the choice of some writers, such as Cheiro in the Chaldean tradition.
- Married or changed names are sometimes read as a second, additional influence rather than a replacement.
Neither is "right". If you want to explore, work out several and compare.
Common mistakes
- Adding the whole name, then reducing each word separately. Pick one method and keep it. Here we add the full name and then reduce once.
- Forgetting accents. José is counted as Jose.
- Dropping a middle name. For the destiny number, include every name in the full name.
- Counting Y inconsistently. Decide whether Y is a vowel or a consonant before you start.
- Reducing a master number by accident. If your total is 11, 22 or 33, note it before you reduce.
Try it with the calculator
The name number calculator works out the whole-name sum by the Pythagorean or Chaldean table and shows each word's sum, so you can follow the working. It currently gives the full-name (destiny) number; for the soul urge and personality numbers, type just the vowels or just the consonants of your name, or add them up by hand as above. To pair it with a number from your birth date, use the life path calculator.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a destiny number and an expression number?
- Nothing. They are two names for the same number: the sum of every letter in your full birth name.
- How do I calculate my soul urge number?
- Add the values of the vowels in your full name using the Pythagorean table (A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3), then reduce to a single digit unless it is 11, 22 or 33.
- Is Y a vowel or a consonant in numerology?
- Practice varies. Most Pythagorean writers treat Y as a consonant; some count it as a vowel when it sounds like one. Choose one rule and use it consistently.
- Should I use my birth name or my current name?
- The standard Pythagorean method uses the full name on your birth certificate. Some traditions use the name you go by. You can work out both and compare.
- Does my name number have scientific support?
- No. Numerology is a tradition and a form of reflection. There is no evidence that the letters of your name affect your character or your life.
