How to work out your life path number from your birthday, with worked examples and what 1 to 9 and master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are said to mean.

Your life path number is the number numerology draws from your date of birth. You add the digits down to a single figure from 1 to 9, or stop early at one of the master numbers 11, 22 or 33. The idea is that the number describes the main theme or lesson of a life. If you'd rather not add it up by hand, the life path number calculator does it in a second and shows every step of the sum.
Before the details, one honest note. Numerology is a belief system, not science. No study has found that a birth date's digits predict personality, career or luck. Plenty of people still enjoy it as a prompt for reflection: a set of old, tidy descriptions to read and ask, "Does any of this sound like me?" That is how we treat it here.
How to calculate a life path number
There are two common methods, and they are worth knowing because different websites use different ones.
The component method (the one the calculator uses by default) reduces the month, the day and the year separately, then adds the three results and reduces again. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept rather than reduced.
The all-digits method adds every digit of the date in one go and reduces the total.
Both always agree on the single-digit root. They can differ on whether a date shows a master number or its reduced form.
Worked example 1: 29 November 1974
- Month: 11 (a master number, so it stays 11)
- Day: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 (stays 11)
- Year: 1974 → 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
- Total: 11 + 11 + 3 = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7
All digits: 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 = 34 → 3 + 4 = 7. Same answer.
Worked example 2: 14 March 1987
- Month: 3
- Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
- Year: 1987 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7
- Total: 3 + 5 + 7 = 15 → 1 + 5 = 6
All digits: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 33. That is a master number, so this method reports 33 where the component method reports 6. Neither is "the" correct one; they are two conventions. The calculator shows which method it used so you can compare.
Life path numbers 1 to 9
These are the traditional descriptions. Read them as old folklore, not a diagnosis.
| Number | Traditional keywords | The common story |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leader, independent, starter | Learning to stand on your own and begin things. The risk is stubbornness. |
| 2 | Peacemaker, partner, listener | Cooperation, tact and patience. The risk is putting everyone before yourself. |
| 3 | Communicator, creative, sociable | Expression through words, art or humour. The risk is scattering your energy. |
| 4 | Builder, steady, practical | Structure, hard work and reliability. The risk is rigidity. |
| 5 | Explorer, adaptable, restless | Change, travel and freedom. The risk is never settling. |
| 6 | Caretaker, responsible, homemaker | Family, community and service. The risk is taking on too much. |
| 7 | Seeker, thinker, private | Study, reflection and inner life. The risk is isolation. |
| 8 | Achiever, ambitious, organiser | Work, money and authority. The risk is being all business. |
| 9 | Humanitarian, generous, finisher | Compassion and big-picture thinking. The risk is struggling to let go. |
The master numbers: 11, 22 and 33
In many traditions, 11, 22 and 33 are not reduced when they appear in the sum, because they are said to carry a stronger version of the number below them.
- 11: the intuitive, inspirational one. Often described as 2 with a higher charge: sensitivity, ideas, sometimes nervous energy.
- 22: the master builder. A 4 with big ambitions, turning large plans into something real.
- 33: the master teacher, a 6 with a wider reach. It is the rarest and the least agreed upon. Some numerologists do not recognise it at all.
Traditions say a master number is harder to live up to, so you might "default" to the reduced number. That is a modern addition, and there is no single rulebook. If you see a master number in your result, you can read both the master and its reduced number and take whichever reads truer.
Why different sites give you different numbers
If you have ever typed your birthday into two websites and got two answers, the method is almost always the reason. One site might reduce the year first, another adds all the digits, and a third may keep 33 while the next stops at 22. Across all dates from 1900 to 2025, the two methods disagree on roughly one date in seven, though never on the single-digit root. A page that doesn't say which method it used isn't giving you enough to check it.
Using your number without taking it too seriously
A few ways people use the number in a way that holds up:
- As a journaling prompt. Read your number's description and write down where it fits and where it doesn't. The "doesn't" half is the more useful one.
- As a conversation starter. Comparing life path numbers with friends is a harmless party game.
- As a cultural study. The roots go back to Pythagorean number lore and early twentieth-century writers such as Balliett, and it's interesting history.
What it shouldn't be is a reason to turn down a job, end a relationship or make a medical, legal or money decision. Descriptions in this tradition are broad enough that most people see themselves in most of them, which psychologists call the Barnum effect.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate my life path number?
- Reduce the month, day and year separately to single digits (keeping 11, 22 and 33), add the three, and reduce the total again. For 29 November 1974 that's 11 + 11 + 3 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7.
- What is the rarest life path number?
- Among the master numbers, 33 is the rarest, and many numerologists don't use it at all. In the component method 22 and 33 are uncommon because they need a specific mix of month, day and year sums.
- Is a master number better than a single digit?
- Not in any measurable sense. Traditions describe it as a more intense version of the number below it, but "better" is not part of the claim.
- Can my life path number change?
- No. It comes from your date of birth, which doesn't change. Different calculation methods can show a different master number for the same date, but the single-digit root stays the same.
- Is life path numerology scientifically proven?
- No. There is no evidence that numbers from a birth date predict personality or events. It is a tradition many people use for reflection and fun.
