1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, using a 12 pt font like Times New Roman with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins. A larger font such as Arial pushes it closer to 2.2 and 4.4 pages. To know exactly how long your own text is, paste it into the free word counter: it counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, and nothing is uploaded.
The page count is always an estimate, because it depends on choices that have nothing to do with how much you wrote: the font, its size, the line spacing, the margins and how many short paragraphs or headings you use. That's why teachers, editors and publishers set word limits rather than page limits. If your brief says "1,000 words", the word count is what matters; the page count is just a way to picture it.
The quick answer chart
These figures assume standard letter or A4 paper, 1-inch margins, normal paragraphs, and no big headings, images or bullet lists. Treat them as rough guides.
| Words | Single-spaced (about 500 per page) | Double-spaced (about 250 per page) |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | half a page | 1 page |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 750 | 1.5 pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 3,000 | 6 pages | 12 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages |
| 10,000 | 20 pages | 40 pages |
The maths is simple: divide your word count by about 500 for single spacing, or by about 250 for double spacing. 1,000 ÷ 500 = 2 pages, and 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 pages.
How the font changes the page count
Fonts at the same point size don't take up the same room. Times New Roman is narrow; Arial and Verdana are wider. Calibri at 11 pt, a common default in word processors, fits more words on a page than either.
| Setup (1-inch margins) | Words per page, roughly | 1,000 words fills about |
|---|---|---|
| Times New Roman 12 pt, single | 500 | 2 pages |
| Arial 12 pt, single | 450 | 2.2 pages |
| Calibri 11 pt, single | 550 | 1.8 pages |
| Times New Roman 12 pt, double | 250 | 4 pages |
| Arial 12 pt, double | 225 | 4.4 pages |
| Handwritten on ruled paper | 200-250 | 4-5 pages |
Handwriting varies the most. Small, neat handwriting on narrow-ruled paper can fit far more than large, loopy handwriting on wide-ruled sheets. If you're writing an exam answer by hand, count the words on one page of your own writing once, and you'll know your personal number.
Other things that change the page count
- Paragraph length. Every new paragraph leaves part of a line empty. Dialogue and short paragraphs fill pages faster than dense essays.
- Headings and lists. A heading uses a line or two for a handful of words. Bullet lists leave white space at the end of each item.
- Spacing after paragraphs. Many word processors add a gap after each paragraph by default. That alone can add a few lines per page.
- Margins and paper size. A4 (210 × 297 mm) is slightly taller and narrower than US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches), so the same text breaks across pages a little differently.
- Line spacing of 1.5. Somewhere between the two columns above: 1,000 words in a 12 pt font usually lands near 3 pages.
How to check your own text
The free word counter gives you the number that actually matters:
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Read the counts at the top: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time.
- Keep editing; the numbers update as you go.
The word counter doesn't show pages, because a page count depends on your document's font and layout, which pasted text doesn't carry. Use the chart above to convert: divide the word count by about 500 for single spacing or 250 for double spacing.
Below the box you'll also see a speaking time and your most used words, which is handy for spotting a word you've repeated too often. If a form or platform limits you by characters instead of words, the free character counter shows how many you have left.
What 1,000 words looks like in practice
- A school or college essay: a typical short essay of four to six paragraphs.
- A blog post: a solid, focused article on one topic.
- A speech: about 7 to 8 minutes out loud at a relaxed pace. See how many words is a 5-minute speech for timings.
- Reading time: about 4 minutes for most adults reading silently. See how long it takes to read 1,000 words.
If you're writing to a word limit, aim within 10% of it unless you're told otherwise. A 1,000-word task usually means 900 to 1,100 words, but some schools and competitions are strict, so check the instructions.

Frequently asked questions
- How many pages is 1,000 words double-spaced?
- About 4 pages in a 12 pt font such as Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. A wider font like Arial makes it closer to 4.4 pages.
- How many pages is 1,000 words single-spaced?
- About 2 pages in 12 pt Times New Roman, or about 2.2 pages in 12 pt Arial.
- How many paragraphs is 1,000 words?
- Usually 5 to 10. An essay paragraph often runs 100 to 200 words, while web articles use shorter paragraphs, so the same 1,000 words may be split into more of them.
- Does the word counter show page count?
- No. Pages depend on the font, spacing and margins of your document, which pasted text doesn't include. Divide the word count by about 500 (single-spaced) or 250 (double-spaced) instead.
- How many handwritten pages is 1,000 words?
- Usually 4 to 5 pages of ruled paper, but handwriting varies a lot. Count the words on one page of your own writing to get your personal figure.
