To combine PDF files into one, open the free PDF merger, add your files, put them in the order you want with the up and down arrows, and click Merge. You get a single PDF with every page from every file, copied exactly as it was. It works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android, needs no account, and your files never leave your device.
People usually need this for one of a few reasons: a job application that wants your CV, cover letter and certificates as one upload, an expense claim with several receipts, a set of scanned chapters, or monthly statements you want to keep together. The steps are the same in every case.
How to combine PDF files, step by step
- Open the free PDF merger in any modern browser.
- Click Choose PDF files, or drag the files onto the box. You can select several at once by holding Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) while you click.
- Need another file from a different folder? Click Add more PDFs below the list.
- Check the order. Each file has a number on the left. Use the ↑ and ↓ buttons to move a file up or down, and Remove to take one out.
- Click Merge N PDFs (the button shows how many files you've added).
- When it's done, you'll see the total page count and file size. Click Download merged PDF.
The file saves as merged.pdf. Rename it to something the person receiving it will understand, like Priya-Sharma-application.pdf.
Limits worth knowing
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Files per merge | Up to 30 |
| Size of each file | Up to 100 MB |
| Password-protected PDFs | Not supported; remove the password first (see Unlock PDF) |
| Sign-up | None |
Merging doesn't re-compress anything. Text stays sharp, images keep their quality, and the merged file is roughly the sizes of the originals added together. If the result is too big to email or upload, see how to compress a PDF for email.
If you have more than 30 files, merge them in groups of up to 30, then merge the results together.
Getting the page order right
The merger puts whole files in order, one after another. It doesn't rearrange pages inside a file. That covers most jobs, but sometimes you need a page from the middle of one file to sit between two others. The trick is to break the files up first:
- Use the free PDF splitter to cut the file into the pieces you need, for example pages 1-3 and pages 4-10 as separate PDFs.
- Add all the pieces to the merger and order them with the arrows.
- Merge.
To shuffle pages within a single file, there's a shortcut: the splitter's One PDF with these pages option keeps pages in the order you type them, so 5, 1-4 moves page 5 to the front. Our guide to extracting pages shows more examples.
The same idea works if a file has pages you don't want in the final document. Remove them first with the free PDF page remover, then merge. Our guides on splitting a PDF into separate files and deleting pages from a PDF walk through both.
A tip for big jobs: name your files with a number at the start before you add them (01-cover.pdf, 02-cv.pdf, 03-degree.pdf). Most file pickers list them in that order, so they arrive in the merger already sorted and you only need to check.

Mixing PDFs with photos or scans
The merger only accepts PDF files. If some of your documents are photos (a phone picture of a certificate, a JPG receipt), turn them into PDFs first with the free JPG to PDF converter, then merge everything together. If you're doing all of this on a phone, our guide to combining PDFs on iPhone and Android covers where your files live and how to pick them.
After merging: a quick check
Open the merged PDF before you send it and scroll through:
- Is every page there? The page count shown after merging should equal the pages of all your files added up.
- Are any pages sideways? Scans often are. Fix them with the free PDF rotator, which saves the rotation into the file.
- Does it need page numbers? For a long bundle, numbering after merging makes it easy for the reader to find things. See how to add page numbers to a PDF.
Why merge in the browser
With EveryApp's free PDF tools, the merging happens on your own device. Your PDFs are never uploaded to a server, so there's no upload wait and nobody else handles your documents. That matters when the files are bank statements, ID scans or contracts. For more on this, read is it safe to upload PDFs online?

Frequently asked questions
- How do I combine PDF files without Adobe Acrobat?
- Use a browser tool like EveryApp's free PDF merger. Add your files, arrange them with the arrows, and click Merge. There's nothing to install and no account.
- Can I change the order of pages, not just files?
- The merger orders whole files. To move individual pages, split the file into parts first with the free PDF splitter, then merge the parts in the order you want.
- Does merging reduce quality?
- No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, so text, images and layout look the same as in the originals.
- Why won't one of my PDFs merge?
- It's probably password-protected or damaged. Open it, remove the password (or save a fresh copy), then add it again. Unlock PDF can remove a password you know (free for a PDF up to 25 MB; Pro handles up to 100 MB).
- Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can merge?
- Up to 30 files at a time, each up to 100 MB. For more, merge in batches and then merge the batches.
- Are my files uploaded anywhere?
- No. The free PDF merger works on your device, and your files never leave it.

Also useful
- Split PDFSplit a PDF into several files, pull out just the pages you need into a new PDF, or save every page as its own PDF. Type pages like 1-3, 5, 8- and download one PDF, or a ZIP when there are several.
- Delete PDF PagesRemove pages from a PDF by typing their numbers, like 2, 5-7, then download a new copy without them. Blank pages, old versions of a page or a whole section go in one step, and the removed pages are really gone from the new file, not just hidden.
