What Does Lorem Ipsum Mean? Origin and Translation
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin from Cicero, written in 45 BC. It means almost nothing, which is the point. Its origin, when to skip it, and a free generator.

Lorem ipsum means almost nothing. It's a scrambled, chopped-up passage of Latin from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), written in 45 BC. "Lorem" isn't even a real Latin word: it's the tail end of dolorem, "pain". Designers use it as placeholder text because it looks like real writing without pulling the reader into the words. You can make as much as you need with the free lorem ipsum generator.
What lorem ipsum means: the original Latin
The familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", is a garbled version of a line from sections 1.10.32-33 of Cicero's book. The real sentence begins:
Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...
Loosely translated: "Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues pain itself, because it is pain..." Cicero was discussing the philosophy of pleasure and pain, arguing that people sometimes accept pain for a greater pleasure.
Somewhere along the way the text was cut mid-word, shuffled and padded with nonsense. So:
| Placeholder word | Real Latin source | Meaning in the original |
|---|---|---|
| lorem | (do)lorem | pain |
| ipsum | ipsum | itself |
| dolor sit amet | (quia) dolor sit, amet | (because) it is pain; (he) loves |
| consectetur | consectetur | (one) pursues |
| adipiscing | adipisci | to obtain |
Read as a whole, the placeholder doesn't form sentences. A Latin speaker would recognise words, but not meaning, which is exactly what you want from dummy text.
Who found the source
For a long time nobody knew where lorem ipsum came from. Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, traced it back to Cicero after noticing the rare word consectetur and hunting for it in classical texts. He published the finding in a 1994 letter to the design magazine Before & After.
You'll often read that printers have used lorem ipsum "since the 1500s". McClintock later said that date was a guess. The earliest well-documented use is on Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s, which put the text in front of designers everywhere; desktop publishing software then carried it into the computer age (as per Wikipedia's lorem ipsum article, 2026).
Why designers use it
Placeholder text solves a real problem: you need to see a layout before the words exist.
- It stops people reading. Show a client a mock-up with real-looking English and they'll edit the sentences instead of judging the layout. Latin-looking text keeps eyes on spacing, fonts and hierarchy.
- It has a natural rhythm. Word lengths and sentence lengths are close enough to European languages that line breaks, paragraph shapes and column widths look realistic. "Text text text" or "asdf asdf" doesn't wrap like real copy.
- It's obviously not final. Nobody mistakes lorem ipsum for approved wording, so it's less likely to slip into a live product unnoticed than plausible English.
- It's free. The text is over 2,000 years old, so there's no copyright to worry about.
When to use real copy instead
Lorem ipsum is a tool for early layout, not a substitute for writing. Swap it out early when:
- Content drives the design. Product pages, forms, error messages and buttons depend on what they say. "Submit" and "Get my free quote" need different space.
- Length really varies. Real headlines range from three words to fifteen. If every placeholder headline is the same tidy length, the layout breaks when real ones arrive. Test with the longest likely text.
- You're testing with users. People can't judge whether a page is clear if it isn't in their language.
- Translation is planned. German or Finnish words run long; Hindi and Tamil need different line heights. Placeholder Latin hides all of that.
- Accessibility matters (always). Screen readers will read placeholder text aloud if it ships.
A good habit: before launch, search your project for "lorem" and "ipsum" to catch any leftovers.

Frequently asked questions
- What does "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" mean in English?
- Roughly "pain itself, because it is pain", but only after you restore the missing "do-" from dolorem. As written, "lorem" isn't a Latin word, so the phrase has no exact meaning.
- Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
- Partly. Most words are real Latin taken from Cicero, but they've been cut, reordered and mixed with made-up words, so the text doesn't form proper sentences.
- Who wrote lorem ipsum?
- The source text is by the Roman statesman Cicero, from 45 BC. Who first scrambled it into placeholder text isn't known; its earliest well-documented use is on Letraset sheets in the 1960s.
- Can I use lorem ipsum for free?
- Yes. The underlying text is more than 2,000 years old and isn't under copyright.
- Why not just use English placeholder text?
- Readable English invites people to read and edit it, when you want them to look at the layout. Scrambled Latin looks like text while staying out of the way.
