Frequently asked questions

What does a numerology calculator work out?

It turns a date of birth and a name into small numbers, using fixed rules. From the date you get the Life Path number, and in the Indian system Mulank and Bhagyank. From the name you get the name (expression) number, the soul urge number and the personality number. It is all addition, and each step is shown.

What are Mulank and Bhagyank?

They are the two birth numbers of Indian numerology. Mulank is the day of the month reduced to one digit, so 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Bhagyank adds every digit of the full date of birth and reduces that to one digit. The Indian system does not keep the master numbers 11, 22 and 33.

How is the Life Path number different from Bhagyank?

Both come from the whole date of birth. The Life Path number keeps 11, 22 and 33 when the sum lands on them, as the Pythagorean tradition does. Bhagyank always reduces to 1 to 9. For 4 July 1990 both give 3. For 11 November 1980 the all-digits sum is 22, so the Life Path number can be 22 while Bhagyank is 4.

What is the difference between the Pythagorean and Chaldean tables?

The Pythagorean table gives A to I the values 1 to 9, then starts again, so A J S are 1 and I R are 9. The Chaldean table, from Cheiro, has no 9 and spaces the letters differently: A I J Q Y are 1, and O Z are 7. The two usually give different name numbers, and the Chaldean method keeps no master numbers. Neither is the correct one; they are two conventions.

Which name should I enter?

The Pythagorean tradition usually uses the full name from the birth certificate. Some Chaldean writers prefer the name you use every day. Try both and see. Only the 26 Latin letters are counted, accents are dropped, and letters from other scripts are left out and listed.

Why is Y counted as a consonant?

Writers disagree about it. We count Y as a consonant for the soul urge and personality numbers, which only changes those two. The vowels are A, E, I, O and U.

Is numerology scientific?

This is a tradition for reflection, not a science. We know of no controlled study showing it can predict events or describe character. This tool shows the method and the traditional meanings.

Is my name or date of birth saved?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser, and nothing is sent to us or stored. Closing the page clears it.

Is the Numerology Calculator free?

Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
