Spelling Bee

Listen to an English word, then spell it. Ask to hear it in a sentence or a little slower. Three levels, a new daily challenge and a streak.

  • Ten words a round, in three levels, and a daily challenge
  • Played by ear: turn your sound on

Spelling Bee is played by ear, so turn your sound on. The words, meanings and sentences are in American English, and so is the voice. With the sound off you can still play: the letter count, the meaning and the written sentence take the place of the voice.

The game runs on your device. Your games and settings are saved in this browser; sign in if you want your progress on your other devices.

Who it's for

Spelling practice
Hearing a word, then writing it, is how spelling tests work, so a round is a short practice for school or for yourself.
English for learners
Learners hear each word and a sentence that uses it, and see what it means, before they spell it.
A daily habit
The same ten words each day for everyone, a minute or two to play, and a streak for the days you keep it up.
Playing together
Pass the phone round or play on a classroom screen. Everyone listens, and one person types.

How Spelling Bee compares

OptionHow it compares
A spelling list on paperA list needs a person to read the words out. Here the words are spoken for you, with a sentence and a slower repeat on request.
Letter-guessing word gamesGames where you guess letters show you the shape of the word. In Spelling Bee you hear the word and spell all of it yourself.

How to play Spelling Bee

  1. Press Play, choose Easy, Medium or Hard (or Today's words), and press Start a round. Turn your sound on: the word is spoken as soon as the round begins.
  2. Type the spelling and press Enter. You get two tries at each word.
  3. Stuck? Hear the word again, say it slower, or hear it in a sentence. The Letters, Meaning and Sentence hints show the same help on screen.
  4. Finish ten words to see your score, which words you got right, and how to spell the ones you missed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need sound to play?

Spelling Bee is made to be played by ear, so it is best with sound on. If you can't use sound, you can still play: the Letters hint shows how many letters the word has, Meaning shows what it means, and Sentence shows a sentence with the word hidden.

How many words are there?

About 300, in three levels of about 100: everyday words, words that are often misspelled, and long, tricky words. Each one has a definition and a sentence that uses it.

What is the daily challenge?

Ten words that are the same for everyone on a given day: four easy, three medium and three hard. A new set comes up each day at midnight UTC, and the days you finish in a row make your daily streak.

How are points counted?

A word spelled right on the first try scores 10, 20 or 30 points by level. On the second try it scores half. A run of right words adds a few more points. Hints are free and never lower your score.

Who is speaking?

A computer-generated voice with an American English accent. The words and sentences are recorded in advance and included with the game, so nothing is sent to or from any service while you play.

Which language are the words in?

English. The game is about spelling English words: the words, their meanings and the sentences are in American English (for example color and favorite), and so is the voice. Only the buttons and help text are translated into your language, so it also suits people learning English.

Can I use my phone's keyboard?

Yes. The answer box opens your keyboard, and its Go key checks the spelling. Predictions and auto-correct are switched off for the box so they don't fix a spelling for you.

Are my scores saved?

Your best scores, words spelled and daily streak are saved on this device. Sign in with a free EveryApp account and they follow you to your other devices too.

Can I install it on my iPhone or Android phone?

Yes, from your browser and free. On iPhone, open Spelling Bee in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome and tap Install. You don't need an app store.

Can I play offline?

Yes. Install it and the game works with no connection: the words and every spoken clip are part of the app, so you can play on a plane or anywhere without a signal.

Is Spelling Bee free?

Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
