Markdown vs HTML: Which to Write and When to Convert
Markdown is quicker to write; HTML gives full control. Write Markdown for READMEs, docs and posts, and convert it to HTML free when a page needs it.

Markdown vs HTML comes down to speed versus control. Markdown is a shorthand you can write and read as plain text (**bold**, - item), and it's turned into HTML before a browser shows it. HTML is the language browsers actually display, with full control over layout, attributes and structure. For most writing (READMEs, documentation, blog posts, notes), write Markdown and convert it with the free Markdown to HTML converter. Reach for HTML when you need things Markdown can't express.

Here's a short announcement in Markdown:
## Office closed on Friday
The office is **closed on 14 November**. Please:
- Submit timesheets by Thursday
- Email [the help desk](https://example.com/help) with urgent issues
And the HTML it becomes:
<h2>Office closed on Friday</h2>
<p>The office is <strong>closed on 14 November</strong>. Please:</p>
<ul>
<li>Submit timesheets by Thursday</li>
<li>Email <a href="https://example.com/help">the help desk</a> with urgent issues</li>
</ul>
The Markdown is shorter and reads naturally even before it's converted. The HTML is longer, but every element is explicit, and you could add a class, an id or an aria- attribute to any of it.
Markdown vs HTML side by side
| Markdown | HTML | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A writing shorthand | The page language browsers render |
| Learning time | An afternoon | Basics in a day, mastery takes longer |
| Readable as plain text | Yes | Cluttered with tags |
| Layout control | Headings, lists, tables, images | Anything: columns, forms, embeds, custom attributes |
| Styling | None of its own; the site's CSS applies | Classes and inline styles |
| Works in a browser directly | No, it needs converting | Yes |
| Easy to review in version control | Very; changes are clean | Harder; tags add noise |
| Risk of broken markup | Low | Higher (an unclosed tag can break a page) |
| Standard | Several flavours (CommonMark, GitHub-flavoured) | One web standard |
When Markdown is the better choice
README files and documentation. Code hosting sites render README.md automatically, and docs tools build whole sites from Markdown folders. Writers and developers can both edit it, and changes show up clearly in a diff.
Blog posts and articles. Many static site generators and some CMSs take Markdown. You concentrate on words; the site's template handles the design. (This page was written in Markdown.)
Notes and knowledge bases. Note apps that store Markdown files keep your notes portable: they're plain text, readable in any editor, decades from now.
Chat and comments. Many chat apps, forums and issue trackers accept Markdown-style formatting for bold, code and lists.
Anything written by people who don't code. **bold** is easier to teach than <strong>bold</strong>.
When HTML is the better choice
Layout beyond a single column. Grids, side-by-side boxes, cards and anything that needs a <div> with a class.
Forms, embeds and interactive parts. Markdown has no syntax for inputs, buttons, video players or iframes.
Attributes and accessibility details. Image widths, loading="lazy", id anchors, lang on a quote in another language, aria-label on an icon link.
Complex tables. Markdown tables can't merge cells or hold lists in a cell.
Email templates. Email clients need table-based HTML with inline styles; Markdown output is only a starting point.
The middle path: Markdown with a little HTML
Most Markdown converters let you drop simple HTML straight into a Markdown file. You can write 95% of a post in Markdown and add 2, a <br>, or an <img src="chart.png" width="400" alt="..."> where you need it. That's often the best of both.
Two cautions:
- Platforms filter HTML differently. Many sites strip scripts, styles and forms from user content. EveryApp's converter does the same: scripts, event handlers, forms and embedded frames are removed, so the output is safe to paste into a page.
- Markdown inside HTML blocks usually isn't processed. If you open a
<div>, the Markdown inside it may come out as literal asterisks.
How to convert Markdown to HTML
- Open the free Markdown to HTML converter and paste or type your Markdown on the left.
- Check the Preview. Tables, strikethrough, fenced code blocks and automatic links are supported. Task-list items come through as plain bullets, because checkboxes are form elements and are removed for safety.
- Switch to HTML to see the code.
- Click Copy HTML to paste it into a CMS's HTML view, or Download .html for a complete web page file.
Conversion happens on your device, so drafts and internal docs stay private. Need placeholder text while you build the layout? The free lorem ipsum generator can copy paragraphs as HTML. If you're pasting code samples that include < or & into raw HTML, run them through the HTML entity encoder first. For the full syntax, keep our Markdown cheat sheet open.
A quick way to decide
- Is it mostly words with headings, lists and links? Markdown.
- Will people other than developers edit it? Markdown.
- Does it need a specific layout, form, embed or attribute? HTML, or Markdown with HTML snippets.
- Is the destination a system that only accepts HTML? Write Markdown, then convert.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Markdown better than HTML?
- Neither is better overall. Markdown is faster to write and easier to read and review; HTML can express any layout or attribute. Most people write content in Markdown and use HTML for the page around it.
- Can a browser open a Markdown file?
- It will show the raw text, not formatted output. A Markdown file needs converting to HTML first, either by your site or a converter.
- Can I put HTML inside Markdown?
- In most converters, yes. Simple tags like
<br>,and<img>pass through. Many platforms strip scripts and forms for safety. - Can I convert HTML back to Markdown?
- It's possible with dedicated converters, but layout details, classes and attributes are lost, because Markdown has no way to express them. EveryApp's tool converts Markdown to HTML only.
- Which flavour of Markdown should I use?
- GitHub-flavoured Markdown is the most widely supported. It adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and fenced code blocks to the original syntax.
