Sound Memory
Listen closely. Flip tiles to find the matching sounds, or repeat a growing sequence of sounds. Twenty-four soft sounds, all on your device.
- Pairs by ear: match tiles by the sound they hide
- Sequence: repeat a growing run of sounds
- Best with sound on. Sequence works muted, and a Show symbols option helps Pairs without sound
Pairs by ear: flip two tiles and listen. Matching sounds stay lit. Sequence: watch and listen, then tap the same pads in the same order. A new daily challenge is dealt every day.

Who it's for
- Train your ear
- Telling a marimba note from a glass tone, and one pitch from another, is a gentle way to practise careful listening.
- A calm break
- The sounds are soft and the rounds are short, so a few minutes is enough to settle down.
- Working memory practice
- Both modes ask you to hold a few things in mind at once, a little more each round.
- Playing together
- Pass the device around on the same daily challenge and compare tries or rounds.
- A quiet game with headphones
- Headphones make the small sounds clearer, and nobody else needs to hear them.
How Sound Memory compares
| Option | How it compares |
|---|---|
| Card matching games | Matching games turn over picture cards. Sound Memory hides a sound under every tile, so you listen instead of look. |
| Pattern-repeating games | Repeat-the-pattern games usually flash four coloured lights. Here the sequence is made of 24 soft sounds, and every one has its own colour and symbol too. |
How to play Sound Memory
- Press Play, then choose Pairs by ear or Sequence, and a level. Press Play on the card to start: the sounds start after that first press, never before.
- In Pairs by ear, flip a tile to hear the sound it hides, then flip a second one. If the two sound the same they stay lit; if not they flip back, so remember where each sound was.
- In Sequence, listen and watch the pads light up, then tap them in the same order. Each round adds one more sound, and a wrong pad ends the run.
- Turn on Show symbols to see each flipped tile's colour and symbol, and try Today's challenge for a board and a sequence that are the same for everyone that day.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the Memory Match card game?
No. Memory Match turns over picture cards and you match what you see. In Sound Memory every tile is face down and hides a sound, so you match what you hear. The pictures here, a colour and a symbol for each sound, are only an optional help.
Can I play without sound?
Sequence, yes: every sound has its own colour and symbol, and the pads light up in them as the sequence plays, so you can follow it by sight. Pairs by ear is made to be played by listening. With sound off you can turn on Show symbols, which shows each flipped tile's colour and symbol, and the game is then playable by sight.
What are the sounds?
There are 24: soft marimba notes, struck-glass tones and small everyday taps such as wood, a teacup, a pebble and a water drop. They are short, quiet and made to be easy to tell apart. They are stored inside the app, so nothing is generated while you play and nothing is sent anywhere.
What do the levels change?
In Pairs by ear the grid holds 4, 6 or 8 pairs (8, 12 or 16 tiles). In Sequence the pads carry 4, 5 or 6 sounds and you repeat 6, 9 or 12 rounds.
How is a game scored?
In Pairs by ear, by the number of tries (two flipped tiles are one try): the fewer the better, and one try per pair is perfect. In Sequence, by the rounds you got through. The best of each level is saved.
What is the daily challenge?
One board and one sequence, dealt from the date (UTC), at the medium level. Everyone gets the same ones that day, and a new one comes at midnight UTC. Finish one each day to build your daily streak.
Is my best score saved?
Yes, on this device. Sign in with a free EveryApp account and your bests and daily streak follow you to your other devices too.
Can I play offline?
Yes. Install it and the game, with all 24 sounds, works with no connection.
Can I install it on my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes, from your browser and free. On iPhone, open Sound Memory in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome and tap Install. You don't need an app store.
Is Sound Memory free?
Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
