Frequently asked questions

How do Roman numerals work?
Seven letters stand for values: I 1, V 5, X 10, L 50, C 100, D 500, M 1000. Add them from left to right, but subtract a smaller letter placed before a larger one: IV is 4.
What is 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: two thousands (MM), two tens (XX), a five (V) and a one (I).
Why does it stop at 3999?
Standard Roman numerals use at most three M's. Larger numbers used a bar over letters to multiply by 1000, which isn't standard in plain text.
Is IIII wrong?
It's a traditional form seen on clock faces, but IV is the standard spelling. The tool reads both and tells you the usual one.
Is the Roman Numeral Converter free?
Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
