How to play Chess
- Choose to play the computer, its level and your colour, or play a friend.
- Click a piece to see the squares it can move to, then click one of them.
- When a pawn reaches the last rank, pick the piece it becomes.
- Checkmate the other king to win. Stalemate, repetition, the fifty-move rule and bare kings end in a draw.
Frequently asked questions
- How strong is the computer?
- Easy makes plenty of mistakes, which suits beginners. Medium plays sensible chess. Hard thinks for up to two seconds a move and will punish loose play.
- Are all the rules included?
- Yes: castling, en passant, promotion to any piece, check, checkmate and stalemate, and draws by repetition, the fifty-move rule and insufficient material.
- Can I take back a move?
- Yes. Undo takes back your last move (and the computer's reply).
- Can two people play?
- Yes. Choose "Two players" and use Flip board to turn it round between moves if you like.
- Is Chess free?
- Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
