Frequently asked questions

What is scientific notation?
A way to write very large or small numbers as a number between 1 and 10 times a power of ten: 45,600,000 is 4.56 × 10^7.
What is E notation?
The same thing written on one line, as calculators and spreadsheets do: 4.56e7 means 4.56 × 10^7.
What is engineering notation?
Like scientific notation, but the power of ten is always a multiple of 3, matching prefixes like kilo, mega and micro: 0.000456 is 456 × 10^-6.
How are significant figures counted?
All non-zero digits count, plus zeros between them and trailing zeros after a decimal point. Leading zeros don't count. Trailing zeros in a whole number like 1200 are ambiguous.
Is the Scientific Notation Converter free?
Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
