How to play Sliding Puzzle
- Pick a size: 3×3, 4×4 (the 15 puzzle) or 5×5.
- Click a tile next to the gap to slide it in. Click a tile further along the same row or column to slide several at once.
- Or use the arrow keys: the tile beside the gap moves in that direction.
- Put the numbers in order with the gap in the bottom-right corner.
Frequently asked questions
- Can every shuffle be solved?
- Yes. Tiles are shuffled by making random legal moves from the solved position, so there's always a way back.
- How are moves counted?
- Each click or key press that slides tiles counts as one move, even when it slides several tiles in a row.
- Any tips?
- Solve the top row first, then the left column, and keep shrinking the puzzle. Leave the last two rows for the end.
- Is my best saved?
- Your fewest moves for each size is saved in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
