Why use Calm Sounds
- A level for every sound
- Rain, thunder, waves, wind and more each have their own slider, so you decide the balance.
- A sleep timer that fades out
- Choose 15 minutes to 2 hours. The last minute fades to silence, then the sound stops.
- Free, with no ads
- Calm Sounds is free, shows no ads in the installed app, and works offline once installed.
- 100% free
- Use it as often as you like. No sign-up and no watermark.
- Private by design
- Every sound plays on your device, and your saved mixes stay on this device unless you sign in to sync them. You can download or delete them at any time.
- Works on any device
- Runs in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, or install it on your phone to use it offline.
Who it's for
- Block out a noisy room
- Layer steady rain or brown noise over the sounds around you, and turn it up until the room fades into the background.
- Set a background for work or reading
- Pick a café, a stream or a quiet fireplace, keep the level low, and let it run while you work.
- Wind down in the evening
- Put on a rainy night or a night train, set a timer of 30 or 60 minutes, and let the last minute fade out.
- Build a sound of your own
- Mix waves with a little wind and birdsong, give each its own level, and save the mix to use again.
How Calm Sounds compares
| Option | How it compares |
|---|---|
| A white-noise machine | A bedside machine is simple and works without a phone, but it has a few fixed sounds. Calm Sounds lets you mix them and set a level for each. |
| Nature-sound videos online | A long video works, but it needs a connection and an app that stays open, and you can't change the balance between the rain and the thunder. |

Frequently asked questions
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once you have installed the app, every sound is stored on your device, so it plays without a connection, in airplane mode too.
Does it keep playing with the screen off?
It is built to: it asks your phone to keep playing and puts play and pause on the lock screen. What a phone does when the screen locks depends on the phone and the browser, and we haven't been able to test them all, so don't count on it. If the sound stops, open the app and press Play. The sleep timer follows the clock, so it ends on time either way.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything works without one. If you sign in, your saved mixes sync between your devices, and you can download or delete them at any time.
Are the sounds real recordings?
No. The eleven nature and place sounds are made with AI, not recorded outdoors, and each one is a loop made to repeat without a break. White, pink and brown noise are made on your device as you listen.
Can I download the sounds?
No. The sounds are part of the app and play inside it. What you can download is your own data, such as your saved mixes.
What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
They differ in how the sound is spread across low and high pitches. White noise is bright and hissy, pink noise is softer, and brown noise is deep and rumbling. Try each at a low level and keep the one you like.
Is Calm Sounds free?
Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up, and installing it on your phone is free too.
