How to use the Sprite Maker

  1. Pick a canvas size, such as 16×16 or 32×32 pixels.
  2. Draw with the pencil, fill, line, rectangle and ellipse tools. Turn on Mirror to draw both sides of a character at once.
  3. Add or duplicate frames to animate it; the previous frame shows faintly behind so movement lines up, and the preview plays as you go.
  4. Download a sprite sheet (in one row or a grid), an animated GIF or a PNG, at up to 16 times the size. Save the project to keep working on it later.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sprite sheet?
One picture holding every frame of an animation side by side. Game engines cut it back into frames, so you load one file instead of many.
Will my pixels stay sharp when scaled up?
Yes. Downloads are enlarged by whole numbers with no smoothing, so every pixel becomes a clean square.
Can I edit a sprite sheet I already have?
Yes. Open a PNG strip or grid and it is split into frames: square frames for a strip, or the whole picture as one frame. Pictures up to 256×256 pixels per frame.
Can I use what I make in my own game?
Yes. What you draw is yours; we claim no rights to it.
Is my work saved?
Not automatically. Use Save project to download a file you can open here again. Nothing is uploaded.
Is the Sprite Maker free?
Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install. Your files stay on your device.
