A wedding invitation for WhatsApp can be one simple image: a few photos in a grid, a caption with the names, date and city, and a QR code that opens the venue on a map. You can make it with the free collage maker, the free meme generator for the caption, and the free QR code generator for the map. All three are free, add no watermark, and work in your phone's browser without uploading your photos.
With the Indian wedding season in full swing, families are sending more invites on WhatsApp than ever, alongside or instead of printed cards. A digital invite is quick to forward to relatives abroad, costs nothing to send, and is easy to update if the mehendi moves by a day.
What a good wedding invitation for WhatsApp includes
- Who: the couple's names, and often the families' names.
- What and when: the main function, date and time. For a multi-day wedding, list each function or send one image per event.
- Where: venue name and city, plus a map link or QR code.
- RSVP: a name and phone number to confirm.
- A personal touch: a photo of the couple, a family photo, or artwork that matches your theme.
Keep the text short. Small print on a phone screen is hard to read, and guests will open the message on a 6-inch display.
Step 1: Make the map QR code
- Open your venue in Google Maps (or your map app) and copy its Share link.
- Paste it into the Link or text box of the free QR code generator. The code appears as you type.
- Click Download PNG.
Test it right away: scan the QR from your computer screen with a second phone and check it opens the right venue. Our guide to QR codes for wedding invitations covers more uses, such as RSVP forms and live-stream links.
One honest note: a guest who receives your invite on WhatsApp is looking at it on the same phone they'd scan with, so a QR code is awkward to use there. It shines on printed cards and when the invite is shown on another screen. For WhatsApp, also paste the map link as text in the message under the image, where guests can just tap it.
Step 2: Arrange the photos (and the QR) in a collage
Open the free collage maker, click Choose photos, and add your images: for example, a couple photo, a family photo, a picture of the venue or a festive artwork, and the QR code PNG.
Settings that keep the QR scannable:
- Shape: Square.
- Layout: 2 × 2 grid (four images) or 3 × 3 grid (nine). In a Square collage, these grids have square spaces, so the QR code fits without being trimmed. Other layouts and shapes trim edges to fill each space, which can cut off part of the code.
- Rounded corners: keep at 0px if the QR is included, so its corners aren't clipped.
- Spacing and Background: pick a festive colour for the gaps, such as deep red
#8B1E2Dor a marigold yellow. Our Indian wedding colour palettes has more ideas.
Put the QR last in Photos, in order so it lands in the bottom-right corner. Under Save as, choose JPG, click Make collage and Download collage.
Don't want the QR in the picture? Use One big, two small or Three columns with just photos, and send the map link as text.
Step 3: Add the names and date
Open the collage in the free meme generator:
- Under Layout, choose Caption above. It adds a white band above the picture with your text in black.
- In Caption, type the main line, for example:
Priya & Arjun · Wedding · Sat 12 Dec · Jaipur. - In Second line (optional), add the time or RSVP:
Pheras 7 pm · RSVP Ravi 98XXX XXXXX. - Untick ALL CAPITALS if you want the names as typed; it's ticked by default and turns the whole caption into capitals.
- Click Make meme, then Download meme.
The font is a tall, bold display typeface, the classic meme style. It's clear and readable on a phone but not ornate. If you want calligraphy or a traditional card design, have a designer make the text panel, then add it to your collage as one of the images.
Long text shrinks automatically to fit, so if it looks tiny, cut words. The picture is kept at up to 2,000 pixels on its long side, plenty for any phone.
Step 4: Check it before you send
- Read it on your phone, not your computer. Can you read the date without zooming?
- Scan the QR from another phone's screen.
- Check spellings of names and the venue, twice. Ask a family member to check a third time.
- Size: WhatsApp compresses images you send as photos, which is fine for an invite. If you'll also email it or post it on a website with a size limit, shrink it with the free image compressor.
Ideas for multi-day weddings
- One image per function: haldi, mehendi, sangeet, wedding and reception, each with its own date, time and map QR. Send them together, or each a few days before.
- A save-the-date first, with just a couple photo, names and month, then the full invite later.
- A thank-you collage after the wedding, with your favourite photos in a 3 × 3 grid. For sharing the videos too, see our wedding video sharing tips.
