The nicest Diwali greeting card is one made from your own photos: your diyas, your rangoli, your family in festive clothes. Put three to nine of them in a grid with the free collage maker, warm them up with the free photo filters, add "Happy Diwali" with the free meme generator, and shrink the file so it sends quickly on WhatsApp. Everything is free, adds no watermark and runs in your browser.
In 2026, Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday, 8 November, according to most panchang listings; check your local panchang for the exact muhurat in your city. That leaves a few days to shoot the decorations as they go up and send a greeting on the day.
Step 1: Take photos worth sharing
Festival lights are tricky for phone cameras. A few habits help:
- Turn the flash off. Flash wipes out the warm glow of diyas and fairy lights.
- Shoot at dusk. Just after sunset, there's still some light in the sky, so you see both the lamps and the house.
- Hold steady. Lean on a wall or rest the phone on a railing; low light means slower shutter speeds and more blur.
- Get close to a diya. A single lamp filling the frame, with a rangoli soft in the background, often looks better than a wide shot of the whole balcony.
- Photograph the rangoli from above, standing on a stool if you can, so its circle isn't squashed.
- Grab details: a plate of sweets, a toran on the door, hands lighting a lamp.
Our tips for better phone photos go further.
Step 2: Give the photos a festive warmth
Open a photo in the free photo filters tool. It refuses photos above about 16.7 megapixels ("too large for this device"), which includes default 24 MP iPhone shots, so shrink those first with the free image resizer. Then:
- Golden warms the whole image, which suits lamp light.
- Punch adds contrast and colour for fairy lights and fireworks.
- Or use the sliders: a little more Warmth and Brightness, a touch of Vignette to draw the eye to the centre.
Press and hold Hold to see the original to compare, then choose Save photo. Use the same filter on every photo you'll put in the collage, so they look like a set. For a nostalgic, old-photo look, see the vintage film photo effect.
Step 3: Build the collage
Open the free collage maker, click Choose photos and pick your favourites. Some layouts that work well:
| Photos | Layout | Idea |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | One wide, two below | Family photo on top, diya and rangoli below |
| 4 | One big, three small | The house lit up, with three close-ups |
| 5 | Mosaic of five | Two big scenes, three small details |
| 9 | 3 × 3 grid | Every corner of your decorations |
Then set:
- Shape: Square for chats and posts; Story 9:16 for a WhatsApp Status or Instagram Story.
- Spacing: 24-48px, with a Background colour such as deep maroon
#6B0F1A, marigold#F2A900or gold#C9A227. - Rounded corners: a little rounding looks softer.
Photos fill their spaces without stretching and are trimmed at the edges where shapes differ, so check faces and the centre of the rangoli in the preview. Choose JPG under Save as, then Make collage and Download collage. The general photo collage guide explains every setting.
Step 4: Turn it into a Diwali greeting card
Open the collage in the free meme generator:
- Caption above puts black text on a white band above the picture. Type
Happy Diwali from the Sharma familyand, in Second line (optional), something likeWishing you light, health and joy. - Text on the picture places bold text over the image itself. Pick White, black outline so it reads on any background.
Click Make meme and download. Long text shrinks to fit, so keep it short. For other ways to add words, see how to add text to a photo.
Step 5: Keep it small for WhatsApp
A full-size collage is 2,160 pixels on its short side and can run to a few megabytes. That's more than a greeting needs, and big group forwards eat everyone's data. Before sending to large family groups:
- Resize it to about 1,080-1,600 px wide with the free image resizer.
- Compress it as JPG at about 75-80% with the free image compressor, which shows the new size before you download.
A few hundred KB is plenty for a sharp greeting on a phone screen. WhatsApp also compresses photos when you send them, but starting smaller means faster sending on a weak festival-night network. Sending a festive video too? See compressing video for WhatsApp.
Greeting ideas beyond the usual
- A Dhanteras-to-Bhai Dooj series: one small collage per day of the festival.
- Before and after decorating: the bare balcony and the lit-up version side by side. See making a before and after photo.
- For a shop or small business: your storefront decorated, your team, and a festive offer in the caption.
- For family abroad: a 3 × 3 grid of everyone at home, so relatives see the whole celebration in one image.
Only use photos you took or have permission to share, especially if you're posting publicly.
