To convert OGG to MP3, re-save the audio as an MP3 so it opens in every music player, phone, car stereo and audio editor. OGG and .opus files turn up as voice notes, game sound effects and web recordings, and plenty of devices won't play them. Our audio converter handles both: choose MP3, pick the file, press Start. It's a pro tool; a free account can try it on audio files up to 30 seconds.
OGG, OPUS and what's inside
Like MP4, Ogg is a container: a wrapper around compressed sound. Two codecs live inside it most of the time:
| File you see | Usually contains | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| .ogg | Vorbis, sometimes Opus | Games, Linux apps, open-source software, some web recorders |
| .opus | Opus | Voice notes from messaging apps, web calls and recordings |
| .oga | Vorbis or Opus | Some messaging apps and audio tools |
Opus and Vorbis are both efficient, high-quality formats. The problem is only support: Windows Media Player, many car stereos, older phones, Apple's Music app, some video editors and many upload forms expect MP3.
WhatsApp and other voice notes
Voice notes are the most common reason people search for this. WhatsApp voice notes are recorded as Opus audio in an Ogg container, typically saved as .opus files on Android. Other messaging apps often use Opus too. To get the file:
- Android: in the chat, long-press the voice note and tap Share (or forward it to yourself by email). Voice notes are also stored in your phone's storage, typically in a WhatsApp "Voice Notes" folder inside Android/media, which a file manager can open.
- iPhone: long-press the voice note, tap Forward, then the share button, and choose Save to Files. The file type you get can vary between app versions, but the converter handles the common ones.
Converting someone else's voice note? Make sure they're happy for it to be shared beyond the chat.
Step by step
- Open the audio converter and sign in. Use Chrome, Firefox or Edge if you can (see the note below).
- Under Convert to, choose MP3.
- Under Choose a file, pick your .ogg, .opus or .oga file (up to 500 MB and 60 minutes).
- Press Start, then Download result. The MP3 is kept for 1 hour.
The MP3 is saved at high quality, a variable bitrate averaging around 190 kbps, roughly 1.4 MB per minute. That's more than voice needs, so voice notes sound exactly as they did, just in a more compatible file.
A note on Safari
Before uploading, the page reads the file's length in your browser. Safari, especially on older iPhones and Macs, can't read every OGG or OPUS file, and you'll see "We couldn't read that file." If that happens, open the converter in Chrome, Firefox or Edge, on a computer or an Android phone. The file itself is fine.
Trying it free
The audio converter is a pro tool. A free account can try it on audio files up to 30 seconds, with 5 free tries a day across all our pro tools. Most quick voice notes fit. Longer files need a plan.
Why OGG to MP3 files get bigger
Don't be surprised if a 200 KB voice note becomes a 1 MB MP3. Opus is extremely efficient for speech, and messaging apps record at low bitrates; the MP3 is saved at a higher bitrate so nothing is lost in the conversion. The sound doesn't get better, the file is just less efficient. If size matters more than compatibility, keep the original. What is audio bitrate explains why.
Which format to choose instead of MP3?
The converter has five choices under Convert to:
- MP3 plays everywhere. The default choice.
- M4A (AAC) suits iPhones, iPads and Macs, and most phones.
- WAV is uncompressed, best for importing into an audio or video editor. Large: about 10 MB per minute at CD quality.
- FLAC is lossless but smaller than WAV. Good for archiving music.
- OGG goes the other way, if a game or app needs OGG.
After converting
- Cut the bit you need with the free MP3 cutter. It works on your device, keeps the MP3's quality, and nothing is uploaded.
- Turn the voice note into text with audio to text, which also reads OGG and OPUS directly. See how to transcribe a WhatsApp voice note.
- Too much background noise? Remove background noise cleans up voice recordings.
Your files and privacy
Conversion runs on our servers, so your file is uploaded. It's deleted as soon as it's converted, and your MP3 is available to download for 1 hour, then deleted too. For personal voice notes, that means nothing is kept once you've downloaded the result and the hour passes.
Convert your OGG

Frequently asked questions
- Can I convert .opus files to MP3?
- Yes. OPUS files are Opus audio in an Ogg container, and the converter turns them into MP3 like any OGG file.
- Why won't my OGG file open in the converter on iPhone?
- Safari can't read every OGG or OPUS file, so the page can't check its length. Use Chrome, Firefox or Edge, ideally on a computer or Android phone.
- Is OGG better quality than MP3?
- At the same bitrate, Vorbis and Opus generally sound as good as or better than MP3. MP3's advantage is that everything plays it.
- Why is the MP3 bigger than my voice note?
- Voice notes use a very efficient codec at a low bitrate. The MP3 is saved at a higher bitrate so nothing is lost, which makes the file larger.
- Can I convert MP3 back to OGG?
- Yes. Choose OGG under Convert to. The OGG is saved as Vorbis.
