A year has 52 weeks and 1 day: 365 days divided by 7 is 52.14. A leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days. Those extra days pile up, so every five or six years a calendar year gets a 53rd numbered week, as 2026 does. You can see every week of any year, with its dates, in the free week number calculator.
That short answer covers most questions. The details matter when you plan a budget, count paydays, run a weekly project or read a week number on a delivery note.
The basic maths
| Year type | Days | Weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Common year | 365 | 52 weeks + 1 day (52.14 weeks) |
| Leap year | 366 | 52 weeks + 2 days (52.29 weeks) |
The leftover day is why your birthday moves forward one weekday each year: 1 January 2027 is a Friday, one day on from Thursday, 1 January 2026. After a 29 February it jumps two days.
Why some years have 53 weeks
When businesses number weeks, a week can't be split between two years, so the leftover days have to go somewhere. Under ISO 8601, the international standard used across Europe and by many companies worldwide, weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday. That rule gives each year either 52 or 53 full weeks.
A year has 53 ISO weeks when:
- it starts on a Thursday, or
- it's a leap year that starts on a Wednesday.
Recent and upcoming 53-week years are 2015, 2020, 2026, 2032, 2037 and 2043. Over a full 400-year cycle, 71 years have 53 weeks, which averages out to 52.1775 weeks a year, exactly matching the average length of a calendar year.
You can check this yourself: open the free week number calculator, keep ISO 8601 (Monday start) selected, pick any date in 2026 and press Show all weeks of 2026. The list ends at week 53, which runs from Monday 28 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Those first three days of 2027 belong to 2026's last week, and 2027's week 1 starts on 4 January.
The US system works differently: weeks start on Sunday and week 1 is the week with 1 January in it. Switch to US (Sunday start) in the calculator and the numbers change near New Year. The guide to what week number it is explains both systems in detail.
How many weeks in a month?
Months don't divide into whole weeks either:
| Month length | Weeks |
|---|---|
| 28 days (February) | exactly 4 |
| 29 days (leap February) | 4 weeks + 1 day |
| 30 days | 4 weeks + 2 days |
| 31 days | 4 weeks + 3 days |
On average, a month has about 4.35 weeks (365 ÷ 12 ÷ 7). A common shortcut is 4.33 weeks (52 ÷ 12), which is close enough for rough budgets but not for exact counts. To count the weeks between two specific dates, use the free date calculator: choose Days between dates and it shows the gap as weeks and days.
Pay periods: 52, 26 or 24?
How often you're paid decides how many paydays fall in a year.
| Pay schedule | Paydays in a usual year | Can it be different? |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | Yes, 53 in some years |
| Every two weeks (fortnightly, biweekly) | 26 | Yes, 27 in some years |
| Twice a month (for example the 15th and the last day) | 24 | No, always 24 |
| Monthly | 12 | No, always 12 |
The extra payday happens when the year has 53 of your payday's weekday. A common year has 53 of whichever weekday it starts on; a leap year has 53 of its first two weekdays. 2027 starts on a Friday, so it has 53 Fridays: a team paid weekly on Fridays gets 53 paydays in 2027. For fortnightly pay, whether an extra payday lands in a given year depends on the exact date of the first payday, so check your payroll calendar.
Why this matters:
- Salaries: if an annual salary is divided into 52 weekly payments, a 53-payday year either pays slightly more in total or the employer divides by 53. Employers handle this differently, so ask yours.
- Budgets: if you budget monthly but are paid fortnightly, two months of the year have three paydays.
- Rent and EMIs: these usually follow calendar months, not weeks, so they stay at 12 a year.
Weeks, working days and planning
A year has 52 weekends, sometimes 53 Saturdays or Sundays. Working days in a year depend on your country's public holidays and your weekly off days, so there's no single number. For specific periods, the date calculator's Weekdays (Mon to Fri) line counts Monday to Friday between two dates; public holidays aren't removed, so subtract those yourself.
For a countdown, such as the weeks left until an exam or a wedding, the free countdown timer counts down to a date, and the date calculator shows the gap in weeks and days.
