The Meme Font: Impact, Outlines and Caption Styles
Classic memes use Impact-style bold capitals in white with a black outline. Why that look works, the newer caption-above style, and how to get both free.

The classic meme font is Impact: a heavy, narrow, all-capitals typeface, set in white with a thick black outline, with one line at the top of the picture and the punchline at the bottom. Newer memes often drop that look for plain black text on a white band above the picture. Our free meme generator does both, using Anton, an open-licence typeface in the same bold condensed style, and needs no font installing.
Here's where the look came from, why it works so well, and when each style fits.
Why Impact became the meme font
Impact is a condensed sans-serif typeface from the 1960s. It became the meme font mostly by accident: it was one of a small set of fonts that came installed on almost every Windows and Mac computer around the turn of the century, so early image-macro makers and meme sites could count on it being there.
It also happens to be very good at the job:
- Narrow letters. Condensed type fits more words across a picture at a large size.
- Very heavy strokes. Thick letters survive being shrunk to a thumbnail and recompressed again and again as an image is shared.
- Tall capitals. All-caps text in a heavy face reads like a shout, which suits the setup-and-punchline rhythm.
Over the years the font, the outline and the capitals became one recognisable package. People spot "a meme" from the lettering before they've read a word.
Why white text with a black outline
A meme can sit on any picture: a dark film still, a bright beach, a grey office. White text alone vanishes on light areas, and black text vanishes on dark ones. A white fill with a black outline (sometimes called a stroke) stays readable on almost anything, because one of the two colours always contrasts with what's behind it.
For very pale pictures, reversing it (black text, white outline) can read better. Our generator has both under Text colour: White, black outline and Black, white outline.
The top-and-bottom format
The traditional layout has two lines with jobs:
| Position | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Top text | The setup | ME: I'LL JUST CHECK ONE EMAIL |
| Bottom text | The punchline | ALSO ME, 3 HOURS LATER |
Keeping both short matters. Text is laid over the picture, so every extra word covers more of the image. In our generator each block can take at most about 30% of the picture's height, and long text automatically shrinks to fit, so brevity keeps your letters big.
The newer caption-above style
On most social apps today, a lot of memes look different: plain black text, often in normal sentence case, on a white strip above an unedited picture. It feels more like a tweet with a photo attached.
It has real advantages:
- The picture isn't covered, which matters when the joke depends on a facial expression or a detail.
- Longer text works. The white band grows as you type, so a two-line observation fits comfortably.
- It reads cleanly on phones, where small outlined text can look fuzzy.
In our free meme generator, choose Caption above under Layout. The text goes in Caption, with an optional Second line underneath. Untick ALL CAPITALS if you want the relaxed sentence-case look. In our tool the caption is set in the same bold condensed typeface, just black on white, rather than a plain sans-serif.
Which style to use
| If your meme... | Use |
|---|---|
| Is a classic setup and punchline | Text on the picture, all capitals |
| Depends on seeing the whole picture | Caption above |
| Needs more than about ten words | Caption above |
| Is a reaction image for a group chat | Either; the classic style is more recognisable |
| Is for a work Slack or a class group | Caption above usually reads as more relaxed |
There's no rule. The classic format signals "this is a meme" instantly; the caption format is quieter and more flexible.
Do you need Impact itself?
No. If you install Impact on your computer and use a general image editor, you can recreate the look by hand: add text, choose Impact, white fill, black stroke, centre it. But that takes a while, and phones often don't have the font at all.
A meme generator does the typesetting for you. Ours uses Anton, a free, open-licence typeface with the same bold, condensed feel as Impact, served from our own site, so it looks the same on every device. It centres the text, sizes it to fit and draws the outline automatically.
Two things it deliberately doesn't do: offer a font menu, or let you drag text around. Those keep it fast and keep memes looking like memes. If you want text on a photo for a quote or invitation instead, adding text to a photo covers settings for that.
Fancy fonts for captions in posts
Sometimes you want styled text in the post itself, not on the image: a bold line in an Instagram caption or a script-style name in a bio. That's a different thing. The fancy font generator swaps letters for look-alike symbols you can copy and paste anywhere you can type. It can't change what's drawn inside a picture, and it's best kept for short decorative bits, since search and screen readers may not read those symbols as normal letters.

Frequently asked questions
- What font is used for memes?
- Classic memes use Impact, a heavy condensed typeface, in white capitals with a black outline. Many newer memes use a plain sans-serif in black on a white band above the picture.
- Why do memes use white text with a black outline?
- The outline keeps the text readable on any picture. White shows up on dark areas and the black edge shows up on light ones.
- Does EveryApp's meme generator use Impact?
- It uses Anton, a free open-licence typeface in the same bold condensed style, so you get the classic look without installing anything.
- What is the caption-above meme style?
- Black text on a white strip above the picture, with the picture left uncovered. Choose Caption above under Layout in the meme generator.
- Can I use lowercase in a meme?
- Yes. Untick ALL CAPITALS in the meme generator. Lowercase suits the caption-above style especially well.
