WhatsApp DP Size: Fit Your Photo in the Circle (Free)
WhatsApp shows your DP as a circle cut from a square. Crop your photo square with space around your face so nothing important gets cut, free.

WhatsApp profile photos (DPs) are square images that WhatsApp shows inside a circle in chats and contact lists. So the best WhatsApp DP size is simply a square photo, around 500-1000 pixels on each side, with your face in the middle and some space around it so the circle doesn't clip your head or chin. You can make that square in seconds with the free image cropper, without uploading your photo anywhere.
WhatsApp doesn't publish an official pixel size that we could confirm, and it resizes whatever you upload. What matters is the shape and where your face sits in it.
Why your DP gets cut off
Two crops happen to every DP:
- Square. When you set a photo, WhatsApp asks you to move and scale it inside a square frame. A tall phone photo (3:4) or a wide group photo (16:9) loses its top and bottom or its sides.
- Circle. In your chat list and at the top of a chat, the square is shown as a circle. The circle covers about 78.5% of the square, so the four corners (about 21% of the picture) disappear.
A photo that looks fine as a square can still lose the top of a head, a raised hand, or the friend at the edge, once it's a circle.
The safe zone
Think of the circle as the frame. Anything you want people to see should sit well inside it:
- Face in the centre. Put your eyes about one third of the way down from the top, and your face roughly in the middle left to right.
- Margin above the head. Leave about 10-15% of the square's height clear above your hair, so the circle doesn't clip the top of your head.
- Nothing in the corners. Text, logos and other people near the corners will be cut.
- Fill it, but not too tightly. A face that fills the whole square gets its forehead and chin clipped by the circle. A face that's tiny is hard to recognise at the small size in a chat list.
Step by step: make a square DP
- Open the free image cropper and choose your photo.
- Under Shape, pick Square 1:1. The crop box keeps that shape while you move and resize it.
- Drag the box so your face is centred with space above your head. Drag a corner to make the box larger or smaller. The cropper refuses a box above about 16.7 megapixels (roughly 4,000 px a side), so on a 24 MP iPhone photo the biggest square is too big: shrink the box a little, or shrink the photo first with the resizer.
- Picture a circle touching the middle of each side of the box. Is your whole head inside it? If not, make the box bigger.
- Under Save as, choose JPG, click Crop image, then download it.
- In WhatsApp, set it as your profile photo. Because it's already square, WhatsApp's own crop has nothing to cut.
If the cropped square is very large, say 3000 × 3000 pixels from a new phone, you can shrink it to about 1000 × 1000 with the free image resizer. It doesn't change how it looks in WhatsApp, but it's quicker to send and set.
Fitting a group or landscape photo
A wide photo with five people won't fit a circle without losing someone. You have three choices:
- Crop to the people in the middle, accepting that the outer ones go.
- Crop to a smaller group, like you and one other person, side by side in the centre.
- Use a different photo for your DP, and save the group photo for your status.
The cropper cuts pictures; it can't add a border around a wide photo to turn it into a square. So for a group DP, crop wide enough that everyone's head is inside the imaginary circle, even if shoulders are cut.
Business and logo DPs
For a WhatsApp Business account, the DP is often a logo. The same circle applies:
- Use a square logo, or put a wide logo in the middle of a square with plenty of space around it.
- Keep the logo's important part (the name or symbol) inside the central circle.
- Bold, simple shapes stay readable at the tiny size in a chat list.
If your logo has a transparent background, save the square as PNG in the cropper. A shop's QR code doesn't belong in a DP: it's too small to scan once shown as a circle.
Quick checks before you set it
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Square shape | WhatsApp crops to a square anyway |
| Head fully inside the central circle | The corners are cut in chats |
| Face large enough to recognise small | Chat lists show it at thumbnail size |
| Sharp and well lit | Blurry photos look worse when small |

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best size for a WhatsApp DP?
- A square image. Around 500-1000 pixels on each side is plenty; WhatsApp resizes what you upload. What matters most is that your face sits well inside the central circle.
- Why does my WhatsApp DP get cut?
- WhatsApp first crops the photo to a square, then shows it as a circle in chats. Tall or wide photos lose their edges, and the circle hides the square's corners.
- How do I set a full photo as my WhatsApp DP without cropping?
- A wide or tall photo can't fill a circle without losing something. Crop it to a square that keeps the most important part, with the faces near the centre.
- Will cropping make my DP blurry?
- No. The part you keep stays at its full resolution. Blur comes from a blurry original or from zooming into a very small part of a photo.
- Is my photo uploaded when I crop it?
- No. The free image cropper works on your device, and your photo never leaves it.
