2027 is a good year for long weekends in India if you plan early. Using the central government's gazetted holiday list, you can turn 1 day of leave into a 5-day break in April (Ram Navami to Mahavir Jayanti), and 3 days of leave into 9-day breaks in March and May. Use the free date calculator to count the days off and the leave you need for each plan, and always check your own employer's or state's holiday list first.
Where these dates come from
The dates below are the gazetted holidays for central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi, as per the Department of Personnel and Training's order for 2027 (O.M. No. 12/2/2023-JCA, dated 16 July 2026). Check the current DoPT notice on dopt.gov.in before you book, in case of later changes. Please keep in mind:
- Your holidays may differ. State governments, banks, schools and private companies publish their own lists. Central government offices outside Delhi also choose some holidays locally.
- Some dates can move. Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) and Muharram depend on the sighting of the moon and can shift by a day. Some calendars also place Holi 2027 on Monday 22 March rather than Tuesday 23 March, so watch for a revised date. Book flexible tickets for those weekends.
- A five-day week is assumed (Saturday and Sunday off). If you work Saturdays, the plans need more leave.
2027 holidays that fall on weekdays
| Holiday | Date | Day |

| Republic Day | 26 January | Tuesday |
| Id-ul-Fitr | 10 March | Wednesday |
| Holi | 23 March | Tuesday |
| Good Friday | 26 March | Friday |
| Ram Navami | 15 April | Thursday |
| Mahavir Jayanti | 19 April | Monday |
| Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) | 17 May | Monday |
| Buddha Purnima | 20 May | Thursday |
| Muharram | 16 June | Wednesday |

Six gazetted holidays fall on a weekend in 2027 and give no extra day off: Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi (both Sunday 15 August), Gandhi Jayanti (Saturday 2 October), Dussehra (Saturday 9 October), Guru Nanak's Birthday (Sunday 14 November) and Christmas (Saturday 25 December). Central government offices don't normally get a substitute day for holidays that fall on a weekend.
Long weekend plans for 2027
| When | Days off | Leave to take | Total break |

| Republic Day | Sat 23 Jan to Tue 26 Jan | Mon 25 Jan | 4 days for 1 leave |

| Holi to Good Friday | Sat 20 Mar to Sun 28 Mar | Mon 22, Wed 24, Thu 25 Mar | 9 days for 3 leave |
| Ram Navami and Mahavir Jayanti | Thu 15 Apr to Mon 19 Apr | Fri 16 Apr | 5 days for 1 leave |

| Muharram | Wed 16 Jun to Sun 20 Jun | Thu 17, Fri 18 Jun | 5 days for 2 leave |
| Janmashtami | Wed 25 Aug to Sun 29 Aug | Thu 26, Fri 27 Aug | 5 days for 2 leave |
| Diwali | Fri 29 Oct to Sun 31 Oct | none | 3 days, no leave |
A few of these deserve a closer look:
- Holi week (March). Holi on Tuesday 23 March and Good Friday on Friday 26 March are only three days apart. Three days of leave give you nine days in a row, at a time of year when much of India is still pleasant for travel.
- Ram Navami and Mahavir Jayanti (April). The best deal of the year: one day of leave on Friday 16 April links a Thursday holiday, the weekend and a Monday holiday.
- Bakrid to Buddha Purnima (May). Bakrid on Monday 17 May already makes a three-day weekend with no leave. Add three days and it runs to Sunday 23 May. As Bakrid depends on the moon, keep your plans flexible.
- Diwali (October). Diwali on Friday 29 October gives a three-day weekend. Many states and employers also give holidays for the days around Diwali, such as Govardhan Puja or Bhai Dooj, so check your list; with one more day off on Monday 1 November it becomes four days.
New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027, isn't a gazetted central government holiday, but many private employers give it. If yours does, that's a three-day weekend from 1 to 3 January.
How to check a plan with the date calculator
Before you apply for leave, check the maths for your own holiday list:
- Open the free date calculator and choose Days between dates.
- Set the first day off as Start date and the last day off as End date.
- Tick Include the end date (count both days).
- Read the total days (your break) and Weekdays (Mon to Fri).
- Subtract the holidays that fall on those weekdays. What's left is the leave you need.
Example: Saturday 20 March to Sunday 28 March 2027 shows 9 days and 5 weekdays. Two of those weekdays are holidays (Holi and Good Friday), so you need 3 days of leave.
Public holidays aren't removed automatically, because every state and company has a different list. For more on how weekday counts work, see counting business days between dates, and for working days month by month, see working days in 2027.
Tips for planning leave around holidays
- Apply early. Bridge days next to festivals are the first to go when a whole team wants the same week off.
- Book travel early too. Fares and hotel prices usually rise for long weekends.
- Keep moon-dependent holidays flexible. Choose refundable or changeable bookings for Id and Muharram weekends.
- Check your company's optional holidays. Many employers let you pick a few restricted or optional holidays, which can bridge a gap without using leave.
- Count down to it. Once a trip is booked, set a free countdown to the departure date and share the link with whoever's coming.
