When does daylight saving time end? In the US and Canada, clocks go back one hour at 2:00 am local time on Sunday 1 November 2026. In the UK and the EU, they already went back on Sunday 25 October 2026. Daylight saving starts again on 14 March 2027 in the US and 28 March 2027 in the UK and EU. The free time zone converter applies each city's rules for any date you pick, so you can check exactly what time it will be somewhere on a given day.
India doesn't use daylight saving time, but it still affects anyone in India who works with the US, UK or Europe, because the time gap changes by an hour twice a year.
When daylight saving time ends and starts: 2026 and 2027
| Region | Clocks go forward | Clocks go back |
|---|---|---|
| US and Canada (most areas) | 8 Mar 2026, 14 Mar 2027 | 1 Nov 2026, 7 Nov 2027 |
| UK | 29 Mar 2026, 28 Mar 2027 | 25 Oct 2026, 31 Oct 2027 |
| EU countries | 29 Mar 2026, 28 Mar 2027 | 25 Oct 2026, 31 Oct 2027 |
| Sydney and Melbourne | 4 Oct 2026, 3 Oct 2027 | 5 Apr 2026, 4 Apr 2027 |
| India | No change | No change |
These follow the rules each region uses today, and match the time zone database built into browsers:
- US and Canada: forward on the second Sunday in March, back on the first Sunday in November, at 2:00 am local time.
- UK and EU: forward on the last Sunday in March, back on the last Sunday in October, at 1:00 am UTC, which is the same moment everywhere in Europe.
- Southern hemisphere: the seasons are flipped, so parts of Australia go forward in October and back in April.
Not everywhere in these countries takes part. Most of Arizona and Hawaii stay on standard time all year, and Queensland and Western Australia don't change either.
"Spring forward, fall back"
The usual way to remember which way the clocks move:
- In spring, clocks jump forward one hour. In the US, 2:00 am becomes 3:00 am, so that night is an hour shorter.
- In autumn (fall), clocks go back one hour. 2:00 am becomes 1:00 am, so the hour from 1:00 to 2:00 happens twice.
Phones, laptops and smartwatches change automatically. Wall clocks, car clocks, ovens and some older devices need changing by hand.
The weeks when the gaps are odd
Because the US and Europe change on different dates, there are a few weeks each year when the usual gap between them is off by an hour:
- March: between the US change (second Sunday) and the European change (last Sunday), New York is only 4 hours behind London instead of 5.
- Late October to early November: after Europe falls back and before the US does, the gap is again 4 hours. In 2026, that's 25 October to 1 November.
For India, the US switch is what matters most. India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York during US daylight saving and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead after it ends. The IST to EST guide has a full table. India's gap with London moves from 4 h 30 min (summer) to 5 h 30 min (winter).
Why India doesn't use daylight saving time
India uses Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30) all year. Clocks were moved forward only briefly in wartime periods in the 1940s and not since, as per the IANA time zone database. Reasons usually given:
- Closer to the equator. Day length changes much less across the year than in London or New York, so moving the clock gains little evening light.
- One time zone for a wide country. IST already covers a big east-west span; the northeast gets very early sunrises. Seasonal changes would add confusion on top of that.
- Simplicity. Railways, airlines, banks and offices all run on one unchanging clock.
Many other countries near the tropics, including most of Asia and Africa, don't use daylight saving either.
Will daylight saving time be abolished?
Changes are often proposed but slow to happen:
- US: the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent, passed the House of Representatives on 14 July 2026 and went to the Senate, where no vote had been reported at the time of writing (October 2026). The Senate passed a similar bill in 2022 that never became law. Until a new law takes effect, the November 2026 change goes ahead.
- EU: the European Commission proposed ending seasonal changes in 2018 and the European Parliament backed it, but member states haven't agreed a common position, so the twice-yearly changes continue, as per European news reports in 2026. The Commission launched a study of the effects of clock changes in February 2026, due by the end of 2026, according to the same reports.
If rules do change, devices and the converter follow once the time zone data in your browser or phone is updated. Check news from official sources near the change dates.
How to check any city with the converter
- Open the free time zone converter.
- Add the cities you care about, such as New York, London and Mumbai.
- Set the Date to a day before the change, then to a day after, and watch the times and UTC offsets shift.
- If you enter a time that doesn't exist (inside the skipped hour in spring), it says so and shows the moment just after the change. If you enter a time that happens twice (in autumn), it shows the first one and tells you.
To count the days until the next change, or plan a trip around it, use the free date calculator. For background on the reference time behind all of this, see UTC vs GMT. Scheduling a call that week? The meeting scheduling guide covers the traps.

Frequently asked questions
- When does daylight saving time end in 2026?
- In the US and Canada, on Sunday 1 November 2026 at 2:00 am local time. In the UK and EU, it ended on Sunday 25 October 2026.
- When does daylight saving time start in 2027?
- 14 March 2027 in the US and Canada, and 28 March 2027 in the UK and EU.
- Do we gain or lose an hour when daylight saving ends?
- You gain an hour: clocks go back, so that night is an hour longer.
- Does India have daylight saving time?
- No. India stays on IST, UTC+5:30, all year, so its time gap with the US and Europe changes when they change their clocks.
- Why is the US-UK time difference only 4 hours some weeks?
- Because the US and Europe change clocks on different dates in March and in October-November. For those few weeks, the usual 5-hour gap is 4.
