Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between snowball and avalanche?
- Both pay the minimum on every debt and put everything extra on one debt at a time. Snowball starts with the smallest balance, for quick wins. Avalanche starts with the highest interest rate, which usually costs less interest overall.
- How is the payoff plan worked out?
- Each month a debt is charged its yearly rate divided by twelve on what's still owed. Every debt gets its minimum, and the rest of your monthly budget goes to the debt at the top of your order. When a debt is paid off, its payment moves on to the next one.
- What if my minimum payment doesn't cover the interest?
- The planner tells you plainly: on minimums alone that balance would never go down. Adding an extra amount each month, or asking the lender about a lower rate, makes the plan work.
- Is this financial advice?
- No. It's an estimate based on what you enter; real interest, fees and minimums can differ. If debt feels unmanageable, a non-profit credit counselling agency can help, often for free.
- Do I need to connect my bank or lender?
- No. You enter your debts and payments yourself, so there's nothing to link and no passwords to share. They stay on this device unless you sign in and choose to sync them, and you can download or delete them any time.
- Is Debt Payoff Planner free?
- Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
