A free calorie counter should let you log food, see your calories and macros, and track your progress without a paywall in the way. The EveryApp Calorie Counter works out your daily target, lets you log meals from 13,000 verified USDA foods, and shows your calories left and protein, carbs and fat through the day. It's free, it works offline, and you can install it on your phone.
This guide explains how it works, what's free and how to get started in a few minutes.
What a calorie counter should do
Most people give up on calorie counting because it takes too long or the app keeps interrupting them. A good one makes the common case quick:
- A sensible target. Based on your age, height, weight, activity and goal, not a number you have to guess.
- Fast logging. Search a food, pick a portion, done. Quick add for when you only know the calories.
- Your own foods. For home recipes and labels the database doesn't have.
- Progress you can see. Weekly and monthly trends, your weight trend and your logging streak.
How the Calorie Counter works
- Open the Calorie Counter and enter your stats: age, sex, height, weight, activity level and your goal.
- The app works out how many calories you burn in a day using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then sets a target for losing, maintaining or gaining weight.
- Press Start counting and log foods through the day. Search the food list, choose a portion and add it.
- Watch calories left and your protein, carbs and fat bars fill. You can change your target or macro split any time.
- See your week, month and quarter against your target, your weight trend and your streak.
If you'd like a quick check of your weight range first, the BMI calculator is free too, though it is only a rough guide.
What's free
Every logging feature is free: food search, portions, macros, your own foods, saved meals, history charts, streaks and sync. A paid plan adds more reminder times and the AI photo estimate for a meal. Barcode scanning is planned and will be free too.
Works offline
Install the app and it works with no connection, so you can log breakfast on a train or lunch somewhere with no signal. Your entries are saved on your device. The AI photo estimate is the one feature that needs an internet connection. Our guide shows how to install the Calorie Counter on your phone.
Your data stays yours
Food and weight records are sensitive. The Calorie Counter asks for your permission before it syncs anything and does not sell your data. Your entries stay on your device unless you choose to sync them to your EveryApp account, and you can download or delete them any time.
Tips for sticking with it
- Log as you eat, not at the end of the day. It takes seconds and is far more accurate.
- Save your regular meals as favourites so repeats take one tap.
- Weigh yourself on a regular schedule and look at the weekly trend, not the daily number.
- Treat the target as a guide. Calorie counts are estimates, and the app's numbers are a starting point you adjust after a few weeks.
This is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition or a history of disordered eating, talk to a doctor or dietitian before counting calories.
