To install Expense Split, open it in your phone's browser and add it to your home screen. On iPhone use Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android use Chrome and tap Install. It then opens full screen like an app and works offline. Installing is free, and you don't need an app store. Open Expense Split to start.
Below are the steps for each device, what you get once it's installed, and what to try if the install option doesn't appear.
Install on iPhone or iPad
Use Safari. Other iPhone browsers don't always show the home screen option.
- Open Expense Split in Safari and tap Install the app, or just stay on the page.
- Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow, at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap Add.
The Expense Split icon appears on your home screen. Open it from there and it runs without the browser bars.
Install on Android
Use Chrome.
- Open Expense Split in Chrome and tap Install the app.
- Tap Install when Chrome asks. If it doesn't ask, open the three-dot menu and choose Install app or Add to Home screen.
- Open the app from your home screen or app drawer.
Install on a computer
On Windows, Mac or Linux, use Chrome or Edge. Click the install icon at the right end of the address bar, then click Install. The app opens in its own window.
What you get once it's installed
- It works offline. Add expenses on a plane, in a restaurant basement or anywhere with no signal. They are saved on your device.
- It opens in one tap. No searching for a link before each expense.
- Reminders. A weekly nudge to settle up, if you turn it on.
Your groups stay on your device unless you choose to sync them to your EveryApp account.
If you don't see the install option
- iPhone: make sure you're in Safari and not inside another app's built-in browser. Open the page in Safari first.
- Android: update Chrome, and try reloading the page once.
- Private or incognito windows often hide the install option. Use a normal window.
- If you are inside a social app, open the link in your normal browser using the menu.
Using it on a trip
Install it before you leave, while you have a connection. Open it once from the home screen so it's ready, then make a group for the trip with everyone's names. From then on, add each expense as it happens, even in places with no signal, because entries are saved on your device. When you're back online and signed in, you can sync the group to your EveryApp account so it's safe if you lose or replace your phone. At the end of the trip, open Balances, read out the short list of payments, and record each one as people pay.
Share it with your group
Once you have it installed, you can start a group for your trip or flat and add everyone's expenses yourself, or invite the others to add their own. Our guide to the free expense split app explains how splitting and settling up works.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need the App Store or Google Play?
- No. Expense Split installs straight from your browser, so there is nothing to download from a store and nothing to pay.
- Is installing Expense Split free?
- Yes. Installing is free and so is the splitting. A paid plan only raises limits on the number of groups and shared members.
- Will it work offline after I install it?
- Yes. You can add and view expenses with no connection. They are saved on your device.
- How do I remove it?
- On iPhone, press and hold the icon and choose Remove App. On Android, press and hold the icon and choose Uninstall or Remove.
- Do my friends need to install it too?
- No. One person can keep the group and add everyone's expenses, then share a plain summary of who owes whom.
