Expense Split vs Expensify: Which One Do You Need?
Expensify is built for business expense reports; Expense Split is a free app for splitting costs in a group. How they differ and when to use each.

Expense Split and Expensify solve different problems. Expensify is a business tool: you scan receipts, build expense reports and send them for approval and reimbursement. Expense Split is a free app for friends, flatmates and families: you log shared costs and it shows who owes whom. If you're splitting a trip or a flat, Expense Split is the simpler fit. If you file expenses with an employer, Expensify is the kind of tool you need.
This comparison is based on what each product is designed for. Check Expensify's own site for its current plans and prices, because they change.

Who each one is for
Choose Expensify when your costs go to someone else for repayment. A sales rep who files travel expenses, a small company that reimburses staff, an accountant who needs receipts attached to every line. These need receipts, approval steps and an audit trail, and that is what Expensify is for.
Choose Expense Split when the costs are shared between people who all pay each other back. A group holiday, a shared flat, a birthday gift, a weekend away. There's no employer, no approval and no report. You want one answer: who owes whom, and the fewest payments to settle.
What Expense Split does well
- Four ways to split. Equally between the people you tick, by shares, by percentage or by exact amounts.
- Fewest payments. Balances shows a short list that settles the whole group, rather than a web of small transfers.
- Exact to the cent. Every split adds up to the full cost.
- Works offline and installs on your phone. See how in our guide to installing Expense Split on iPhone and Android.
- Your groups stay on your device unless you choose to sync them.
What Expense Split doesn't do
Be clear about the limits. Expense Split doesn't scan receipts, route expenses for approval, reimburse anyone, issue cards or connect to accounting software. If you need those, use a business expense tool. It is also not a payments app: it tells you who owes what, and you pay each other however you like.
Can you use both?
Yes, and many people do. Use Expensify for work costs your employer repays. Use Expense Split for the trip you take with friends. They don't overlap, so there's no reason to force one tool to do both jobs.
If you only need to split a restaurant bill
You may not need either. The free tip calculator splits a bill with tip and tax between any number of people in a few seconds, with no sign-up. Use Expense Split when the costs keep coming over days or weeks.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Expense Split an alternative to Expensify?
- For group costs between friends and family, yes. For business expense reports with receipts, approvals and reimbursement, no. They are built for different jobs.
- Is Expense Split free?
- Yes. It is free to use. A paid plan raises limits on the number of groups and shared members, but you never need one to split a bill.
- Can I scan receipts in Expense Split?
- No. You enter each expense yourself: what it was, how much, who paid and who shared it.
- Which is better for a group trip?
- Expense Split. It is designed for shared costs among friends, with simple splitting and a short list of payments to settle up.
- Does Expensify have a free plan?
- Plans and limits change, and sources disagree. Check Expensify's own pricing page for the current terms.
